Description

Ron Eckerman was an early pioneer in the concert industry. In 1973, he began producing concert tours and created a concert lighting and tour management company, Clearlight Enterprises. The organization toured with the top bands of the era: Fleetwood Mac, Peter Frampton, Willie Nelson, War, Humble Pie, Foghat, Alvin Lee, Waylon Jennings, Trapeze, Montrose, Gary Wright, Foreigner, and many others. In 1976, he took on the challenge of managing Lynyrd Skynyrd, and witnessed and participated in their meteoric rise to fame and worldwide acclaim. After a sequence of events that resulted in a plane crash and the loss of four friends, Ron carried guilt with him his entire life for the tragic plane crash. After recovering from the plane crash, he went on to produce in television, film, and stage, and taught theater and artist management at Santa Monica College. In May of 2013, Ron took on the biggest challenge of his life when he was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia. He unfortunately lost his battle on May 11, 2014. It was one of his final wishes to have his book re-released and photos added and a cover change, and to have all profits donated to the Leukemia Foundation of Texas. "The Last Tour: Love, Laughter, and Tears" was released in November of 2014 by his wife and caregiver, about his courageous battle against leukemia. He never gave up hope and he never stopped smiling. It is a heartfelt testament of what a couple endures when they know they have a limited amount of time left together. It is available on Amazon as a paperback as well as Kindle. "The Last Tour: Love, Laughter, and Tears" by Carolyn Day

From The Inside ~ the way it really was

This is the best book written from the inside of one of the greatest Southern Rock bands. All the 'meat & potatoes' are here,....written by 'RonEckerman', as he was called by the boys. Ron Eckerman was Lynyrd Skynyrd's tour manager and survived the plane crash. This story is absolutely captivating and 'tells it like it is' or was in their day. Musicians especially will want to know the 'ins & outs' of the music industry and this book will put quite a bit into perspective for them. All that glitters is not always gold and after upper managements' take, pay-offs to everyone including percentages to the venue all the way down to the roadies,....the earnings were not as great as one would think. Turn It Up! is a factual 2 year (almost diary-like) of the daily dredge of touring and making it all work. Ron's ability to deliver the truth, the love and 'brotherhood' with Ronnie Van Zant, the trials and tribulations within the band, fist fights with knock-out punches, food fight shenanigans & tearing up hotels,....makes this book (without a doubt) one great read from cover to cover. All Skynyrd fans will enjoy this book and I highly recommend it !

Still waiting on the definitive Biography of America's Rolling stones.

Best so far, much better than Gene Odum's two books. Odum was a childhood friend of Lead singer Van Zant who clearly feels bitter about being left behind while the band traveled and made history. Ronnie Van Zant pitied him and brought him aboard the last year tour, which Odum has milked into two books, autograph sessions, and memorabilia sales. Truth is Odum wasn't close to Van Zant at all, and is closer to the tribute band members out playing Ronnie Van Zant's songs today.
Author Eckerman doesn't suffer from the jealousy and bitterness Odum feels. He was their lighting manager, then road manager, and refrained from too much drugs so his memory was pretty clear. Sadly RonEckerman(spoken as one word like the band did), passed away, but this is a good, if short and incomplete last 18 months before the band died in 1977. Like most if not all plane crash victims he remembers nothing of the plane crash so that part is still frustrating and incomplete. Who pulled out Ronnie? Who pulled out Steve? What were the last words of the fallen. Nobody knows.

One Of The Best Skynryd Books On The Market

The author goes deep into the personalities of each band member by recalling private conversations and events that took place during his time with the band. This is a great inside look of what made this band one of the greatest rock and roll bands of all times. I've read several books on LS, and I have to say this is the best!

Resonates With Skynrd/Music Fans

Well written in chronological order with flashbacks to the plane crash at the start of each chapter, which I think builds even more interest and drama of a real tragic event which robbed the music world of a fantastic band. I've read some other books written by other members of the bands entourage and this book helped complete the story adding a different perspective. A great read for Skynrd fans but also for music fans in general.

Amazing Story of an Incredible Band

Incredible book. Kept me in suspense while learning about life on the road with one of the most prolific bands of all time. I was lucky enough to have met Ron right before he was diagnosed with Myeloid Leukemia.
