Description

From Booklist When the dust cleared from Marvel’s Avengers vs. X-Men (2012) event, the best thing left standing was this dandy new title, which combines members of both teams to stand against bigotry and hatred. And there’s plenty of that, when Nazi anachronism the Red Skull comes calling, armed with telepathic powers harvested from the brain of the deceased Charles Xavier. Remender, currently giving Captain America an injection of sf energy, serves up a feast: dense, intelligent writing that asks significant questions; a battle not only of arms but of ideologies; and a cast of characters that gives movie stars like Captain America, Thor, and Wolverine their due without ignoring the rich personalities of lesser-known players. He couldn’t have better support than Cassaday’s art, the most purely gorgeous in contemporary superhero comics, so clean and clear the pages practically glow with life. Cassaday inserts action expertly to give the story maximum drama and, in between, has such mastery of body language and expression that the characters are as compelling as those on a movie screen. --Jesse Karp About the Author Rick Remender is the writer/creator of comics such as Fear Agent, Strange Girl, Black Heart Billy, XXXombies, Sorrow and Last Days of American Crime. For Marvel he has written, or is currently writing, titles such as Uncanny Avengers, Captain America, Uncanny X-Force, Secret Avengers, Punisher, Doctor Voodoo andVenom. He currently reside in Southern California.John Cassaday is an American comic book artist and writer living in New York City. A self-taught illustrator, Cassaday studied filmmaking and directed TV news before leaving Texas to pursue a career in comics. He is best known for his work on Astoinishing X-Men and Planetary

Avengers/X-men unity squad

In the aftermath of Avengers vs. X-men, Captain America has decided it's time to take a more active role in human/mutant relations. His idea is to form a team of Avengers and X-men that will work to realize Charles Xavier's dream. The team consists of Captain America, Thor, Scarlet Witch, Wolverine, Rogue and Havok as the team leader. Standing in their way is The Red Skull and his S-men. Rick Remender does a fantastic job here of making the Red Skull a truly evil and despicable villain. I won't reveal what he does, but it's pretty horrific. The Skull is now poised to be one of the best villains in the Marvel Universe. Another great thing this series does is add Scarlet Witch back into the fold. There is a lot of tension here between her and Rogue, which is understandable since the Scarlet Witch caused many problems for the mutant population by almost making them extinct. Rick Remender does a superb job here, and I'm excited to hear that he will be continuing some of the plot threads he introduced in Uncanny X-Force (which was fantastic) here in this title. On art duties, we have stellar work from John Cassady on issues 1-4, and Olivier Coipel on issue 5. I highly recommend giving this series a try if you want the best of both worlds (Avengers and X-men). The storytelling is enough to make this one of the best new titles to come out of the Marvel Now! initiative

Remender knows Sci Fi

I followed author Rick Remender over from his excellent work on the Uncanny X-Force, he puts the heroes in compelling situations and makes decades of absurd comic continuity fascinating.

The Uncanny Avengers Vol 1 is the kick off in a newly crafted super hero team that features both Avengers and X-Men. After events in the Avengers vs X-men story arc Captain America feels guilty that he and his allies did not do enough to fight against anti mutant sentiment. To rectify that he wanted to show Avengers working alongside mutants.

Team members include: Wolverine, Havok, Rogue, Captain America, Thor, and Scarlet Witch.

The book follows the heroes as they form the team and have a run in with the Red Skull. The primary purpose of these stories is to show the teams growing pains and set up a future significant storyline.

I am excited to follow this series.

We have a winner!

It's hard to see beyond Bendis and Johns sometimes especially when it's a mainstream comic but this is a very good book. Avengers World, or whatever it was called was beyond bad with terrible characters and useless team-ups trying to combine X-men and Avengers after their war (Sunspot and Cannonball? Really?). Uncanny picked some good characters. It could have done without Wolverine but I guess every Marvel comic has to have him in it and Sunfire definitely seems superfluous (and that's saying something with Wonderman on the team). All in all it is a great start to what could be a long run in the comic world and having Havoc on the team ensures a showdown with Marvel's all time d-bag: Cyclops.

*Spoiler* The romance between Wanda and Steve is great! I hope it lasts. Sharon was 'ok' but just not Cap territory and the Scarlett Witch currently being the black sheep of the Marvel Universe and Captain America being... well Captain frikkin America Rogers just makes for a great match. Here's hoping Cap busts Vision's robo butt into a scrap pile!

I like the new costumes. Across the board I have hated the changes in the costumes in both Marvel and DC to satisfy the politically correct (Powergirl with no boob window? That's hurting her, not us!). Wanda's trenchcoat with plunging neckline is both sexy and modest, good combo. Cap's utility look was always good way back when. I would like a new look for Rogue and Sunfire. Considering they have Janet van Dyne on the team I think a costume overhaul is in order.

All in all this is a good book and I highly recommend it.

Uncanny Avengers recruit and give Red Skull the boot…….for now.

This is a good start to the Uncanny Avengers. Remender brings in more than just the 6 Heroes you see on the cover of the comic. The Red Skull strikes, again, but this time he is hand is cut short when the Uncanny Avengers show up and send him fleeing for now. There is tension in this group between some group members due to past events, and the whole mutant event that just happened with AVX.

This is going to be a good series to follow. Don't miss out.
Vol 2 is out too so you'll NEED to get it with this.

Also their is an ode to Days of Future Past, but with Avengers and Mutants.

A review from someone who hasn't read comics in 20 years

I haven't really read Marvel comics since the 90s, but still had a love for the characters, movies, etc. I decided to get back into things with the Marvel NOW! relaunch, so I'm reviewing each of the collections from that perspective...

This book is almost like Marvel living out their big screen fantasies of an X-Men/Avengers shared universe. In case you're not a nerd, you may not realize that Marvel comics owns both the X-Men characters and the Avengers characters, but Marvel movie studios does not. Hence, Robery Downey hasn't called up Hugh Jackman for backup yet. But in the comics, anything goes. And apparently it really goed recently, with some sort of big X-Men VS The Avengers crossover event scuffle, prior to the Marvel Now! relaunch, and the subsequent cancellation of two long running series: The Uncanny X-Men and The Avengers.

I guess in the end the mutants and earth's mightiest heroes kissed and made up, because in this book we get a new "Unity" team consisting of half Avengers: Captain America, Thor, Scarlet Witch, and half X-Men: Wolverine, Rogue, Havoc. Fun Fact: Scarlet Witch is a character who currently is in the midst of a real world movie studio fight, and may end up appearing in both Avengers 2 and the new X-Men movie, played by two different people, because money and stuff. Anyway, the story dives right in without any sort of "Previously on..." block of text. Cyclops has apparently killed Professor X (!), and everyone hates him now (more so than usual), but they don't really go into why or how this happened. I thought this was supposed to be a jumping on point for new readers, yet it plays like the next chapter of a big story arc and is an odd choice for a debut. And this next chapter isn't even very interesting. Since I wasn't privy to what's been going on, I didn't feel any of the weight of Wolverine speaking at Prof X's memorial, or understand the tension between Rogue and Scarlet Witch (cat fight!). But even if I did, I still think this book would suck. The bad guys are corny and the art looks like 1996 with computer coloring.

The next Marvel NOW! review is here: [[ASIN:0785168206 All-New X-Men, Vol. 1: Yesterday's X-Men]]

But by issue #5 a new penciller and inker step in and the quality improves immensely. The story gets a little more engaging and it ends on a bit of a cliffhanger. I'll give Vol 2 a try, but if it gets lost in the mail I probably won't notice. So far, not a great start in revitalizing my interest in Marvel comics.

So Good!!

I loved uncanny avengers! I didn't know much of anything about scarlet witch (chick in the red costume) other then being magneto's daughter, or havok (the dude in the black costume) and they didn't appear to be that cool but then I read this and havok quickly became my favorite member of the team. This volume is more of an x-men story then an avengers story so you'd need to know what happened in AvX to understand what's going on, so if you're brand new to Marvel or comics in general (as i was recently), either read Avengers vs X-men or look up the plot to that elsewhere. The villain (i won't mention who) was actually interesting in this volume, I always thought he/she was pretty corny but in uncanny avengers he/she was awesome.
Pre-ordering uncanny avengers volume 2 ASAP. Can't wait for it!

Just grasping for straws...

I thought Remender has had some decent stuff early on, but he's at the end. His demension z on captain america was HORRIFIC. The guy feels like he's run out of stories or if he has stories, the are terribly told. This felt contrived as most of his stuff does now. There was a couple okay moments, but then it turned into shlock.

Gonna try uncanny avengers vol 2. if its bad I'm done reading Remender.

A great start from the AvsX title

Unless you have read Avengers vs Xmen event, this book will not have that foreground for which this particular story builds from. Perhaps this may be the weakness in what I consider a well written engrossing story that builds so well on each character used. The particularity of story basically builds on the fact that mutants are distrusted after the ensuing world change caused by ex-members of the x-men (in particular Cyclops). Therefore Captain America decides to choose Cyclop's brother, Havoc, as the leader of this avengers team made up of half avengers and half x-men. Now that you know where the title comes from and you also got yourself a great story.

However the combination of xmen and avengers, rememder takes one step even farther with a red skull combining his mind with the skills with one subtantial x-man. As the story goes along, payoffs and risks are set up very well with a true catastrophe bringing the uncanny avengers to work together. Along the storyline remender uses somewhat poetic descriptions within the panels that come with that modern twist. Not only is played well, it also takes you back to those old school marvel classic tales.

I was very happy with what I read and I think after getting a giant kick of AvX I am looking forward to this. One thing I think people might forget is that Marvel has a strong canon that's constantly building itself, connecting strands building stronger roots. This is just prime example of how that is being established. However, if you have not read any marvel stuff especially AvX, you might want to think twice and perhaps do some research before entering the fray.
