Description

"Rosenfelt very well could be the funniest American author alive today...He's charming, likable, self-deprecating, self-aware and utterly hysterical."--Associated Press"Rosenfelt demonstrates again that he's a master storyteller in this immensely enjoyable new Andy Carpenter novel. His writing is crisp, his plot unfolds at a rapid clip and his characters are people you'd like to hang out with. Surprises in the plot and gripping courtroom scenes make it difficult to put down."--"RT Book Reviews" (4 stars) on "Unleashed""Unlike Rosenfelt's supercharged stand-alones, books in the Andy Carpenter series are more leisurely, character-driven pleasures...Rosenfelt has had plenty of time to hone his protagonist's wiseass humor and refine his oddball cast, which, alongside millionaire defense attorney Carpenter, includes four octogenarian computer whizzes, a taciturn bodyguard, and a brainiac accountant. [An] entertaining caper."--"Booklist "on "Unleashed""A fun mystery...surprising enough that I gasped in public." --New Jersey "Star Ledger" on "Leader of the Pack""Andy is as effervescent as ever, and the courtroom byplay is consistently entertaining." --"Kirkus Reviews "on" Leader of the Pack""Rosenfelt walks a line between pulse-pounding suspense and laugh-out-loud humor...One of the best in the business." --"Associated Press" on "One Dog Night""A blessed anomaly in crime fiction . . . Rosenfelt peels back the layers of puzzlement ever so skillfully, tantalizing us throughout until, finally, both Andy and the reader are enlightened...A gem." Predictable and tiresome characters

I started out liking these books, but the characters are getting tiresome and predictable. They never change: Andy gripes about working, then takes a case. He complains about his secretary who doesn't do any work (why does he keep her?). He walks his dog, drinks beer with his friends, watches sports and obsesses about Laurie. Laurie puts up with his insecurities. The plots take way, way too long to develop into anything and are getting a little farfetched. I am almost a third of the way through Unleashed and Andy is just now meeting with the prosecutor. I have no idea where the plot is going and what’s more, I don’t really care. It isn’t enjoyable to read a book you have to struggle through.

ANDY C SEEMS TO BE GETTING TIRED - JUST AVERAGE

I just finished this book and feel I am being a bit generous giving "Unleashed" 3 stars. I generally thing Rosenfelt is a very entertaining author, even in his stand alone books, so I didn't want to be too harsh, but this entry seemed like a tired effort.
The story did not have the fast pacing of the earlier Andy Carpenter books...the humor was sparse and largely focused on sex, and even the courtroom action was rather bland in comparison to other stories in this series. A lot of what made these books enjoyable seems to be dialed down with this one.
There was no face paced action, no tension in the courtroom, and very little of his sarcastic humor.
In addition, I think Rosenfelt did not take advantage of building enough tension or concern relative to the "threat", even though the opportunity to do so was there. The resolution and "ending" were rushed and just didn't seem to be worth all the time spent getting there.
Marcus appears a few times, but is largely there to mumble.

All in all, this one is very forgettable and I am happy I obtained this on a library sale rack.
Don't make this one your first Andy Carpenter book - Others are much more entertaining !!!!!

Saving the Innocent and Strays

The Andy Carpenter series has been a found treasure for me. I first began reading Open and Shut because I saw the golden retriever on the cover. Being a golden lover, I checked it out and have loved the series. Each book has its own mystery and verve, and they all present an appealing array of characters with Andy Carpenter at the center. This book is indicative of the series overall by offering an entertaining, smartly written mystery with ongoing character development of likeable characters. It has suspense and for the most part a believable plot. And, of course, it features golden retrievers as well as other furry friends. I recommend this book and the series. Unleashed involves Andy defending his friend and associate Sam Willis who has found himself in the middle of a murder mystery and charged for the murders. It continues to include the elements of mystery, courtroom, murder and golden retreivers.

Sam adopts Crash

Sam misses a meeting with a new client because of hitting a dog and staying to help him. Later that evening, the client dies in a plane crash, a plane Sam would have been on. When the coroner discovers the client was dead before the crash – he had been poisoned with botulism - his wife Denise is arrested. While Andy prepares her defense, domestic terrorists plan a national plot that intersects with Andy’s investigation. Denise eventually reveals her true self when she ultimately accuses Sam of poisoning her husband. Meanwhile, Sam adopts “Crash,” the dog he hit, convinced she is the smartest dog in the world, much to Andy’s annoyance because Tara already has that honor. The weakness in the story is that Sam is arrested based solely on the accusation of Denise.
