I don't understand how people can think this book is an easy read. It takes me forever to get through ...

So far, I'm enjoying the book. I've only read about 100 pages but need to say that this book is not for dummies. I was hoping for U.S. history put simply for people who honestly struggle with comprehension and big words (me). . .and that is not what this book is. I don't understand how people can think this book is an easy read. It takes me forever to get through each chapter 1) because I'm spacey and 2) because I have to look up the definitions to a bunch of words that people don't actually use. It's frustrating because when I do look up most of the words, the author could have easily written "he gave a long, agressive speech" instead of saying "he gave a harangue." Maybe not everyone would agree with me, but it seems unnecessary and contradicting.

Other than that, I got this book because I could never pay attention to any of my history classes growing up. It's impressive and concerning that I passed with how much I didn't know (which I realized after reading about the revolution in this book). Again, I am frustrated about the big words, but my husband and Google help me understand and I do feel more confident and interested in basic history now. Looking forward to the rest!

Good history lessons, but author exposed his biases...

I learned quite a lot, and mostly enjoyed reading thisbook. However, the reason for the three stars i Ithink the author often showed his subjective political and social views on people, places, and events. When authoring a book on history, one needs to stay neutral.

My son's high school History teacher recommended this book as supplemental reading for their coursework

My son's high school History teacher recommended this book as supplemental reading for their coursework. I've used it in homeschooling his younger brother. It provides a good overview of history in an easy to read style. Important dates and events are clearly marked if you want to use it to quickly review for an exam.

Very readable but gets some facts wrong

It is very readable. I used a few chapters in a senior high school class and they said it was fun to read. My one complaint is that as I have been reading more chapters I have found a few inaccurate facts. For example p. 208 says "males were given the right to vote through the 16th amendment." It was the 15th that did that. The 16th amendment is about income tax. Another example, p. 201 says Teddy Roosevelt became president at 43. He was 42. He was sworn in Sept 14, 1901 and his b-day was not until Oct 27. I could go on, but you get the idea. If they were to proofread better it could have been a 5 star book.
