Description

From Publishers Weekly In this cheery manifesto, healthy-living guru Freston (Quantum Wellness) promises readers who gives up meat, dairy, and eggs that they will effortlessly lose weight, avoid cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and Alzheimer's, save money, help the poor, reduce their carbon footprint and animal suffering, and evolve spiritually. Freston, coining the word "veganist," puts a soft edge on the vegan lifestyle: "It's not about hard lines or purity or perfection but about intention and holding ideas loosely and taking steps in the direction of the kind of person you want to be." She supports her claims with interviews from medical authorities like Dean Ornish and Neal Barnard, numerous stories from people who converted and changed their lives, and a few tales from animal rights activists who went undercover in the factory farm. The book provides "tips for making the switch," FAQs answered by Dr. Barnard, and sample menus, but no recipes, so readers used to meat and potatoes may be stymied by how to prepare "flax seed and whole-grain pizza with classic margherita topping." Even so, for the novice, this book offers a gentle, guilt-free path to a meatless (or even, as Feston says, "vegan-ish") life. (c) Copyright PWxyz, LLC. All rights reserved. Her articles appear regularly on the Huffington Post and Alternet, and her work has been featured in Vanity Fair, Harper's Bazaar, Self, W, and Fitness, among other publications. Features & Highlights

  • Kathy Freston wasn't born a vegan. The bestselling author and renowned wellness expert actually grew up on chicken-fried steak and cheesy grits, and loved nothing more than BBQ ribs and vanilla milkshakes. Not until her thirties did she embrace the lifestyle of a veganist--someone who eats a plant-based diet not just for their own personal well-being, but for the whole web of benefits it brings to our ecosystem and beyond. Kathy's shift toward this new life was gradual--she leaned into it--but the impact was profound. Now Kathy shows us how to lean into the veganist life. Effortless weight loss, reversal of disease, environmental responsibility, spiritual awakening--these are just a few of the ten profound changes that can be achieved through a gentle switch in food choices.
  • Filled with compelling facts, stories of people who have improved their weight and health conditions as a result of making the switch, and Q&As with the leading medical researchers, Veganist concludes with a step-by-step practical guide to becoming a veganist…easily and gradually. It is an accessible, optimistic, and illuminating book that will change the way you eat forever. No less delicious, still hearty and satisfying--just better for you and for all.

Disappointed

I was disappointed with this book. I should have believed the low scores. If you want a book to help you defend the vegan lifestyle then this is for you. But if you want a book to help guide you into the vegan lifestyle then this is not for you. I will certainly miss bookstore where you can look through a book before purchase. This one will be donated to the library.

Vegetarian to Veganist

I have been a vegetarian for nearly 30 years. I have considered going all the way to a Vegan lifestyle for quite some time, and this book was just the little nudge I needed.

The author, Kathy Freston, takes a very gentle approach with her nudge, by explaining the science AND the spirit of Veganism. No preaching here, no shaming...simply the facts, stated clearly for the student who is ready for the teacher. Reading "Veganist" is one of my better choices of the year. Living a Vegan lifestyle is the "right thing to do".....for the person and the planet.

Conscious eating

Kathy Freston is a poster child for eating a plant based diet. Having read Quantum wellness and seeing her TV interviews, I was curious about Veganist. My reason for trying to be a vegetarian was basically compassion for farmed animals. So it didn't take much convincing for me agree with that chapter in the book- although is was my tipping point to no longer allow myself to to contribute to that industry.
I was most impressed with her emphasis on the ability to get our protein from a plant based diet and its positive affect on our health and the environment. I think everyone who is concerned about their health or their children's health should read the book.
I'm in my 60's and it is never too late to learn to live more consciously for ourselves, our children and the planet. Thank you Kathy.

worth the price of admission

not preachy - unlike all the other vegan choices. Kathy 'offers' suggestions and advises what she did to move smoothly over to plant-based eating. I enjoy her writing.

Great book if you are thinking about becoming Vegan

Great book if you are exploring veganism or if you need something to help you make the leap. If you are a vegan, this book is really nothing new. I bought it, read it and gave it away to someone who I thought would like it. The term "veganist" isn't really the invention that Kathy would like you to think it is. Just a run of the mill vegan book.

Eye and Heart Opening

I was moving toward a Vegan diet before I read this book. Now there's no question in my mind that this is the right path for me. This book is informative, well written and eye-opening. This is not really a "how-to" book as much as a "why" book, presented with 10 promises for those moving to a plant based diet. I highly recommend it to anyone considering changing to a Vegan way of life.

Great introduction to the benefits of going vegan

This book suggests "leaning" into veganism. It presents 10 "promises" and uses a chapter to describe each promise. The promises are: 1) lose weight; 2) lower risk of cancer, heart disease, diabetes (or even reverse); 3) live longer and better; 4) take yourself out of harm's way; 5) save money; 6) reduce harm to the environment; 7) help the global poor; 8) reduce animal suffering; 9) be in line with wisdom from spiritual traditions; 10) personal and planetary evolution and growth. There are also chapters that discuss how to make the shift to become a vegan, answer questions, give meal plans and shopping lists, and list lots of resources for recipes, cookbooks, websites.

After reading this book, I decided to become a vegan, even though I had not even considered being a vegetarian before! The author says "it's progress, not perfection." So even if you do not fully become a vegan, even going part way will improve your health, and the health of the planet (not to mention the health of the animals). Even if you have no thoughts of being a vegetarian or a vegan, it's a good idea to be aware of information in this book that sheds light on how most of our food is produced and how it affects our health (or lack of health).

Great info to read!!!

This book is easy to read with great information that is not aggressive but makes you think of the reasons why becoming a vegan can be a very good decision that will positively impact your health. I have shared it with friends and family and are carnivorous...not to make them feel guilty but to get educated as what a vegan diet is all about and what can be accomplished with it.
