Was not appropriate for grade

I teach fifth grade. The prefix choices involved words that were higher level and needed to be explained to most of the students. It wasn't the affix itself that was a problem, but rather the words that were used as examples. They word choices didn't help students to grasp the meaning of the word by knowing the meaning of the affix itself. It was good that the author gave different activities for students to work with the words in context, but they were not thorough enough for students to fully grasp the word meaning and they are not words the students encounter very regularly.

Do Not Buy!

DO NOT BUY! Printing error with this book. There should be picture cards for each Unit 1-10. The appendix includes pictures for only the ODD units. The content is really good and so I wish to keep the book; and yet I would like to obtain the missing pages. Therefore, I contacted Scholastic both through email and phone, and was told that Amazon had to resolve the matter. I called Amazon and was told that it was out of their hands and that I should contact Scholastic. So disappointed.

"suffix" to say... ha ha ha

This is a really good packet of useful information for kids between the ages of 8-15. It's about learning prefixes and suffixes. You know, I don't believe I was ever taught these two words in my English class. It's a shame because learning them is pretty fun once you know how to do it. Of course I'm a 31-year old adult now so I have to question just how *much* fun it is for someone in my age group, haha. Oh well, in that case it works as a nifty reminder what prefixes and suffixes are in case I were to forget. Whenever I need a little brushing up on my vocabulary, here's a worthwhile method. Anyway, highly recommend for the kids and teens going through (and perhaps struggling) at English classes.

Helpful book!

As the days of spelling text books are gone, this is a great classroom aid. It is a good fit for my average to high sixth grade students.

author error - content missing

I like this book. The picture card concept is good. However, picture cards are only included for the odd numbered lessons even though the directions for each lesson, including the even numbered ones, call for picture cards. For example, picture cards for unit 1 are on page 57, unit 3 on page 58, etc. Unit 2 is completely omitted.

Great Activities but Not Recommended for Lower Elementary

The packets are great but I felt that they were way too difficult for my students. I teach fourth grade in the Bronx and bought the book to supplement my curriculum. I was hoping to use the packets for homework and in-class work but for the level at which my students are currently at, they would be unable to complete the packets independently.

fantastic product but more pics please

Excellent for beginning ESL learners except would be better if the words had pictures in the introduction -- so many new words but they don't know the meaning - I would recommend including lessons with visuals for each word

When one tries to make copies for students, some ...

When one tries to make copies for students, some of the lines do not show, especially for the puzzles and crossword activities.

Not for 4th grade

Our 4th grade teacher is sending these home and there is no way our smart 4th grader knows any of the vocabulary words being used as examples. Humanitarian, Quadriceps, Financier, etc.

Bought for classroom

I use this for my enrichment group. I don't like giving them worksheets, but this is a great book to teach the skills. There is a pre-test, lots of practice pages, a post test and a page helping you introduce the concept.
