  • Walter is a lazy mouse. He is so lazy that he always misses school and spends all his time in bed. He is so lazy that eventually his family forgets about him and moves away…without him. Alone and scared, Walter heads out into the world to search for his family. He travels through a dark forest and soon meets a turtle and some frogs. Walter decides to create a new home on Mouse Island. His froggy friends live nearby, and Walter tries to teach them things. With his own island―and friends who depend on him―Walter must learn to take care of himself. There is no time to be lazy! But will Walter ever see his family again? First published in 1937 and back in print for the first time in decades with Marjorie Flack’s own illustrations, this is a classic tale of adventure and friendship, and the importance of perseverance. Wonderful book! Every couple seconds my child would say ...

In the first chapter, Walter's family forgets him in a move - they are a very busy mouse family with eleven other children. When he comes home, he discovers his family is gone, there's no food, and no bed. Walter frantically runs through the forest searching for him, until he comes upon hundreds of frogs singing in the moonlight. They help him to make a new home, until he can find his family.

Wonderful book! Every couple seconds my child would say What?!?! - but in a happy way, like she couldn't believe her ears to hear how lazy this mouse was and everything that happened to him.

"Lazy" or ADD?

My 4 yo enjoyed this story very much, but I was uncomfortable with Walter's laziness being such a huge plot point. His oversleeping and inability to focus in school sounded a lot more like ADD or maybe depression to me. Sadly, working harder and waking up early don't fix either of those conditions - and certainly don't excuse his whole family picking up and moving w/o him. For some reason, Walter doesn't go to a trusted adult for help. Instead he runs out of town in a panic, and quickly gets lost in the woods. This was kind of a parent nightmare for me.

All in all, this is a morality tale that has thankfully been left behind and mostly forgotten. Sorry, Nancy Pearl. I like most of her other book recommendations, but wish we'd skipped this one.

Still have nightmares 40+ years later

I still have nightmares about this book decades later after my parents read it to me. Instead of learning about perseverance and not being lazy, I learned that "your family will leave you if you don't walk fast enough and not only will they not miss you, they will replace you."

Poor little mouse

I preread this book before giving it away and it worries me somewhat that a child might relate to a mouse who was
left behind by his family - separation anxiety - just a thought...will read with child in case issues or concerns come up.

Did not realize it was a chapter book. Will read it myself and paraphrase as I "read/tell" the story to my pre-school sped. students

Farfetched!

I remember reading this story as a child in second grade. I think the part about Walter being so forgotten about that his family moves away without him is extremely farfetched. In what family does that ever happen? Not the kind of story I'd read to my children.

Sweet story of perseverance and growth mindset.

This was my favorite book as a child. I’ve enjoyed sharing it with my elementary classes and they love hearing what happens to Walter next. My only complaint is that there’s a typo misspelling Walters name (I don’t know the page number off hand.)
