Features & Highlights

  • The long-awaited seventh book of the bestselling Gray Whale Inn Mysteries is finally here! When a tour company books the Gray Whale Inn for a full week, innkeeper Natalie Barnes can’t wait to get cooking — and to hitch a ride on the antique schooner Summer Breeze, getting up close and personal with the local whales. But when one of the humpback whales turns up dragging a mass of fishing gear from its tail, the tour takes a dark turn. It turns darker still when the schooner’s handsome captain winds up attached to the vessel’s anchor, sixty feet underwater… and not by accident. Before long, the tour naturalist (and Natalie’s best friend’s beau) is behind bars, charged with a murder Charlene swears he didn’t commit. Stir in a surprise visit from Natalie’s quarrelsome sister, midnight kitchen sabotage, a sick orphan kitten, and a mysterious investor with plans for a massive resort on the quaint island, and Natalie’s got a recipe for potential disaster. When a second body turns up just outside the inn, the heat is on Natalie to solve the double murder… or risk ending up with her own goose cooked.

Fun story but needs some editing

I've read MacInerney's previous Gray Whale Inn books and have enjoyed them. They are light, easy reading, ideal for traveling! The characters are somewhat predictable but the stories will hold your interest. The problem I had with this latest book is the large number of typos and other grammatical errors. (Who edits these???) For instance, in some cases a character is talking about a male, but later in the paragraph "he" is referred to as "she". In other cases, a wrong word entirely is used, ie: "had" when the word should have been "and". Small errors like these interrupt the reader's thought process and can be annoying.

Enjoyable but not as good as others in the series...

I have read all of the books in the Gray Whale Inn series. I have enjoyed them and will continue to purchase any new one in the series. That being said, I found this one to be the weakest book of the series. In addition, I was disappointed with a couple of plot errors/mistakes (stating something happened on a certain day, then changing the day, then changing it back again by mistake regarding the whereabouts of one of the suspects). Also, some sloppy proofing errors that should have been caught in advance (like referring to the detective as a "she" then as a "he" then back to "she" etc). Still, the book is a pleasant light read but not as good as some of the other ones from earlier in the series.

Wish I could stay at this Inn!

I've read all the Grey Whale Inn series and this one is one of the best. The story line moved quickly and I found it hard to stop and go to sleep! The end of the chapter always ended in a way that made it impossible not to read the next chapter to see how things went. There were several different storylines going on but it was not difficult to keep them all clear. I would have liked to go with Natalie on the Summer Winds and watch the whales!

My favorite author for sure!

Whale of a Crime, Volune 7 in the Grey Whale series is a MUST READ! Taking me back to Cranberry Island with Natalie at the Inn, made me feel the coziness and beauty of the island. The tour group that visited there was headed for murder, mayhem and excitement! This book was a page turner. I wanted to savor every word on each page, yet could not stop reading until the mystery was solved! My favorite author for sure! Looking forward to Volume 8!!

A fast reading cozy that will fill in a wintry weekend

I enjoyed this, the seventh book in the series, more than the previous offerings. There was no added fluff, just a nicely flowing book with multiple side stories to keep the layers fluid without the usual “let’s get on with it” feel.

Innkeeper Natalie Barnes finally has her inn booked to capacity and things are going smoothly. That is until a touring company has a couple of guests that have more on their mind than the scenery. When the ship captain’s body is pulled from the water and odd things begin to happen at Gray Whale, Natalie and John are beginning to believe that someone is not only out to complicate their lives, but to also shut down the inn itself.

Turns out that the captain has been on the island before and left a trail of broken hearts in his wake. The new boyfriend of Natalie’s best friend is charged, but things are not that simple. As Natalie digs, the past reveals itself, but not before a few other problems get in her way such as Natalie’s domineering sister, rumors of a new resort on the island, and a travel writer that seems to be making the wrong type of waves.

There is one clue that is dropped in the middle of the book and if you did not pick it up, that is ok, it all comes to light in the end and you find yourself saying, “Shoot, I knew that had to be important”. Good job Karen MacInerney and thank you for bringing us back to Cranberry Island.

Same story you've read before!

I love the characters in the series and her descriptions are rich. However this book is a rewrite of things that have happened in her other books.Someone trying to develop Cliffside, overflowing toilets and other events we have read before. There is also an editing problem which makes you stop and reread... and how many times does she need to say her husband is an LL Bean Model? I don't know if the series till holds my interest.

Does the author not read her own books? Another plot to takeover Cliffside-almost verbatim on the guest with overflowing water and insurance adjuster-same story in previous book-it is like several people writing the books-SMH-too many errors

Awesome Reading for Anyone

This whole series has been one of the most enjoyable reading experiences I have had from a book. I anxiously await the release of each new book and dread ending one without having another to replace it
