Slow Burn Murder Mystery!!!!

I really wanted to like this book but nothing major really happened and it dragged for so long that I wasn’t really invested. The premise seemed promising which made me push through but I think the dual POVs from Alexis and Blair took away from the novel. The murder wasn’t really the center of the story so many times I questioned what certain things had to do with the plot itself because there was a lot of rambling going on.

Then once the murder happened we don’t really get anymore excitement until nearly the end of the book. I didn’t really care for any of the characters which made this fall flat for me. There were a few twists and turns but nothing substantial enough to make up for the slow pacing. The ending was a little predictable which I figured out a little earlier on who the murderer might be but the second person involved was a little surprising.

Overall, it was meh the characters lacked depth and didn’t really add to the atmosphere of the book. I wanted more from this and I really didn’t believe the motive behind the murder was worth it. Can’t say I recommend because the book was really iffy for me. Special thanks to the author, minotaurbooks, & netgalley for my advanced copy!!!

Clever and entertaining!

Thank you to NetGalley and Minotaur Books for the ARC of this book. I enjoyed this book. It is the perfect epitome of a domestic thriller, which I cannot get enough of! While I had some suspicions about who killed Teddy, I absolutely would never have guessed the true reasons "why" behind his death. This book was clever and entertaining and I'd love to read future books by this author. 4 stars!

Nice try, but no

The description for this book really made me want to read it. It sounds like a new couple moves to a nice new neighborhood, make friends, then someone ends up dead and we have to figure out why and who. Typical domestic thriller.

The narrators are Alexis and Blair. Alexis and her husband Sam buy a house in a rich neighborhood that needs a lot of fixing up. Blair is married to Teddy and a pillar of the street. There are various other neighbors that ran together. Early in, Teddy is murdered but there is surprisingly little development of this major plot point. Most of the chapters are about Alexis fretting about not fitting in, how crappy her husband is, and how she hates her new house (that she insisted they buy??) and Blair eating/drinking/doing interior design. Very slow and not much happens until the end when the motive and killer are revealed. Came out of nowhere and far fetched.

Slow-burn and predictable

"Desperate housewives meets the Couple Next Door" is a fairly accurate description! The twist was bit predictable, but it was a well-developed plot. The beginning was slow and I didn't really like any of the characters (especially Sam). I feel like quite a few subplots were started but not finished (like all the comments about Alexis' weight, which didn't really lead to anything). All that being said, it was well-written and enjoyable to binge!

Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC!

Excellent

Fabulous!

The blurb calls it “Desperate Housewives meets The Couple Next Door.” I’d say that’s accurate, with a dash of “The Good Neighbor” thrown in for good measure.

This story centers around Alexis and her husband Sam moving to an exclusive Washington D.C. neighborhood. The house they move into is less than stellar, but would be beautiful when renovated. However, in the meantime, Alexis, stays home while the house seems to be crumbling around her! The move is more or less a fresh start for the couple, who have one child No another on the way. Alexis is trying to leave her past, in the past, and her husband is furthering his career. The new neighbors welcome them, and invite them into their exclusive world. Of course, something goes terribly wrong, or in this case something bad happens. One of the neighbors, Teddy, is found dead? Alexis becomes friends with Blair, the wife of the deceases. who is an enigma, and the friendship blossoms as the hunt for the killer continues. Not all is what it seems in this exclusive neighborhood and this death is only the beginning of disturbing incidents. What happens with the two of them once the killer is found…?

This novel, is tight, taut, and so suspenseful. The main characters, Alexis and Blair. are neither likable or have any redeeming qualities, which makes them all the more delicious! These two women are manipulators, self serving and have so many secrets it makes your head spin.

When you think you have figured this story out, you will realize you weren’t even close.
