Description

“ When Nobody Was Watching provides a harrowing account of athletes’ sacrifices. Lloyd’s single-mindedness has undoubtedly put her in a different plane to most people.”xa0– The Guardian “…the point of the memoir…is to show how dedication and a relentless work ethic can overcome an endless series of obstacles, both personal and professional.” –L.A. Times “We are reminded time and time again that our role models, the people we think we know because they play for our favorite team, are not at all who we thought. Otherworldly skills and talents aside, they face the same challenges, heartbreaks and doubts as we do. That’s the message that comes through in Lloyd’s book…” –USA Today "A remarkable portrait of the relentless drive and sacrifice required to truly be the best." –Booklist "If you are a real soccer player – then this is the book for you to read . . .Open and refreshing . . . From the preface to the epilogue, this book is filled with passion and the solid wisdom of a winner . . . Inspiring and uplifting. Definitely a GREAT READ." –GoalNation "Hard to put down . . . Axa0must read for women's soccer followers and hopefully sets a standard for future books on the women's game." –TribalFootball — CARLI LLOYD is captain of the U.S. Women's National Soccer Team and has been named the FIFA World Player of the Year for two years in a row (2015 and 2016). • In 2015, the US Women’s National Soccer Team won its first FIFA championship in sixteen years, culminating in an epic final game that electrified soccer fans around the world. It featured a gutsy, brilliant performance by team captain and midfielder Carli Lloyd, who made history that day, scoring a hat trick during the first sixteen minutes.?  But there was a time when Carli almost quit the sport. In 2003 she was struggling, her soccer career at a crossroads. Then she found a trusted trainer, James Galanis, who saw in Carli a player with raw talent, skill, and a great dedication to the game. Together they set to work, training day and night, fighting, grinding it out. Despite all the naysayers, the times she was benched, the moments when her self-confidence took a nosedive, she succeeded in becoming one of the best players in the world and bound for the Summer Games in 2021 at thirty-nine.

Teaching girls to teach girls to teach girls

I'm a soccer gal from Jersey all grown up. I played competitively in youth and high school, then co-ed recreational through college and into motherhood (agree with Carli that pickup games and casual scrimmaging are the best places to improve). Now I occasionally coach. Reading this book, I found the writing so-so (refreshingly unshowy though) and the egocentrism of the narrator a bit of a grind, but I'm inspired to go back to coaching with a slightly different style based on challenging girls individually to keep beating their own best records.

Fantastic and real

This book is a real look at someone who became the best in the world. There were a lot of times where things didn’t go her way, but Captain Carli never stopped working. She talks about the important coaching relationships in her life and gets real (sometimes a little uncomfortable, but important) about her career. I’ve recommended it to my students and cousins as a great example and a path.

2016 World Player of the Year

Carli Lloyd is astounding, and so is her book! Wayne Coffey encapsulated the Delran girl with 2016, World Player of the Year, yielding an accurate composite of Carli's journey and achievements to date. She had not slowed down in her 2019 World Cup performance. I wholly expect and count on Ms. Lloyd earning another Gold in the 2020 Olympics.
She is such a tremendous person on and off the pitch. The fact that she walked out of the crucifixion of Hope Solo in 2007, yet showed the respect due to Abbey Wambach in her final World Cup final appearance, Carli took off the Captains Armband and placed it on Abby's arm. In my opinion, the 2015 US National Women's Team is the greatest to take to the pitch. Proof positive of this assertion lies in the 2019 World Cup Champions made predominately from the 2015 World Champion led by Carli Lloyd!
Great story, read it for yourself.
