Description

"Milburn uses an effortless style, navigating the reader from Marine Corps Boot Camp to Somalia to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan through Special Operations Task Force operations against ISIS. Insightful details and meaningful anecdotes are interspersed throughout, adding the right amount of context without impeding the overall story." Special Operations Journal "A decorated Marine’s officer's riveting account of some thirty years of often horrific frontline fighting from, Somalia to Iraq. Milburn’s to hell and back memoir is gritty, erudite, and reminds us of the extraordinary sort of people who keep us safe while we sleep." Victor Davis Hanson, The Hoover Institution, Stanford University,Author, The Second World Wars. How the First Global Conflict Was Fought and Won "Milburn has constructed a real tour de force of recent military history, strongly written and executed with the dedication and attention to detail you would expect from a Marine Special Operations commander." Booklist "This is simply the finest war memoir to emerge from the last two decades of constantxa0fighting." Bing West, co-author of "Call Sign Chaos", New York Times Bestseller. "...the best combat memoir to emerge from the modern battlefield. Milburn’s astonishing Marine career took him from Somalia in 1992 to Syria In 2018 and everywhere in between, including traditional infantry and unique advisor and special operations commands that resulted in fighting for the same Iraqi cities years apart, again and again. The result is a searing perspective on endless Middle East combat that has no peer." Owen West, former Assistant Secretary of Defense for Special Operations "In the fields that today we know as Special Operations, individuals throughout history have developed near-legendary standing….The first half of the 20th century gave us T. E. Lawrence and Marines like Edson, Carlson, and Pierre “Pete” Ortiz…..Without hyperbole, the combat memoir of Colonel Andrew Milburn, USMC, When the Tempest Gathers, establishes this Marine leader’s name among this storied group…… this genuine tale of the triumphs and the challenges of leadership in today’s wars….is most importantly a compelling and completely authentic story." Marine Corps Gazette "....a valuable addition to war memoir literature and well worth reading. There are numerous useful lessons packed into this extraordinarily insightful and accessible book. It is ideally suited as a professional military education resource for Marine, Army, and SOF NCOs and officers as well as any American seeking a better understanding of the toll of our post-9/11 wars on the All-Volunteer Force." Proceedings - U.S. Naval Institute "Milburn’s experiences provide a sobering exploration of the complex and dangerous nature of being an advisor to Iraqi forces." Marine Corps History "After reading this powerful and beautifully written memoir, indispensable for understanding how a warrior engages in military combat, one can’t help but wonder if perhaps a movie or a television series based on it might be next." The Washington Times "Andy Milburn provides a work that seems to bring a sense of pride to what many call the 'Long Wars', some even the 'Lost Wars.' Colonel Milburn dictates the story I feel many veterans, myself included, of those wars wished to be conveyed. Milburn’s work is the perfect 10/10 in my opinion. It will be added to the list of quintessential memoirs for the men and women who have served during that time period." Marine Corps Association "Exceptionally well written, organized and presented...a unique and especially recommended addition to the personal reading lists of all dedicated military history buffs..." Midwest Book Review "This book should be taken as a serious work, and added to your ‘must have’ lists, to be read alongside McFate’s Goliath and Kilcullen’s The Dragons and The Snakes , because Milburn has lived and recorded what others only frame academically.xa0Any thinking British military person should take this book and examine Milburn’s experiences and ideas." Wavell Room "By the end of the book you will have an appreciation of the hardship of military life for the service members and their families, be exposed to a narrative about the harsh reality of combat, and ponder the need for politicians and senior military officers to be more rigorous in the debate about the purpose of future wars." SOF News COL. ANDREW MILBURN was born in Hong Kong and grew up in the United Kingdom where he attended St Paul’s School and University College London. After graduating from law school, he enlisted in the US Marine Corps as a private. He was commissioned from the ranks, and as a Marine infantry and special operations officer, has commanded in combat at every grade. As the commanding officer of the Marine Corps’ special operations regiment, he was selected to lead a multi-national task force given the mission of defeating ISIS in Iraq. He retired in 2019 as the Chief of Staff of Special Operations Command, Central (SOCCENT), the headquarters responsible for the conduct of all US special operations throughout the Middle East. He and his wife Jessica live in Tampa, Florida with their two children and a coterie of rescued dogs.

Features & Highlights

  • "Milburn has constructed a real tour de force of recent military history, strongly written and executed with the dedication and attention to detail you would expect from a Marine Special Operations Commander." ― Booklist
  • These are the combat experiences of the first Marine to command a special operations task force, recounted against a backdrop of his journey from raw Second Lieutenant to seasoned Colonel and Task Force Commander; from leading Marines through the streets of Mogadishu, Baghdad, Fallujah and Mosul to directing multi-national special operations forces in a dauntingly complex fight against a formidable foe. The journey culminates in the story’s centerpiece: the fight against ISIS, in which the author is able to use the lessons of his harsh apprenticeship to lead the SOF task force under his command to hasten the Caliphate’s eventual demise. Milburn has an unusual background for a US Marine, and this is no ordinary war memoir. Very few personal accounts of war cover such a wide breadth of experience, or with so discerning a perspective. As Bing West comments: “His exceptional skill is telling each story of battle and then knitting them into a coherent whole. By the end of the book, the reader understands what happened on the ground in the wars against terrorists over the past twenty years.” Milburn tells his extraordinary story with self-effacing candor, describing openly his personal struggles with the isolation of command, post-combat trauma and family tragedy. And with the skill and insight of a natural story teller, he makes the reader experience what it’s like to lead those who fight America’s wars.

Fantastic Read ! What combat leadership is all about.

This is Brandon. I have served nearly 32 years in the military and have had some great leaders. At the very top of that list is Col Andrew Milburn. I had the distinct pleasure of serving with him when he was in command of 1st BN 3rd Marines. He was an extraordinary leader, mental tough, intellectually curious, with a heart for his Marines and compassion for the Iraqi people. This book captures the essence of what is like to serve in combat and the weight of decisions that Marines deal with on a daily basis. It highlights the art of leading Marines while accomplishing the mission. It is a highly compelling read and I hope my non military friends will read this book to gain some insight into the life of Marine at war and the cost it entails. I give it the strongest recommendation possible. The time you spend reading it will be well worth it!

A Good Read !!

Before you dive into the following paragraphs of my review, let me say this book is the best I’ve read in some time-full stop.

It is a well-written and concise memoire of a commander’s experience in difficult and politically challenging environments. Col Milburn cuts through the murky politics of the Levant while providing a fast moving chronicle of combat and operations. In many respects, a good survey on what a 21st century commander must consider when leading troops in today’s non- state/failed state sponsored conflicts. If you’ve read “Crusade in Europe”, Eisenhower’s memoire of his experience as Supreme Allied Commander during the Second World War, it’s uncanny how similar the coalition building and politicking come into play when running a military operation except on a smaller scale in the Levant-but equally as challenging. I bring up Eisenhower’s memoire for another reason. Both describe a commander who has depth and breadth of character, a sense of history and a person who doesn’t take themselves too seriously in how the present themselves. Both real, human leaders who take service to their country and the people they lead in healthy perspective.

This book has broader value as a guide to leadership within and without the military. If you follow that leadership requires a multitude of skills and knowledge outside of those directly responsible for the job, using a little imagination, there’s a lot to be learned from this book. It’s a must read from company grade officers with aspirations for higher command and field grade officers as benchmarks.

There’s much more I could say about this book but I hope I’ve said enough to urge you to read this book. It ‘s one you’ll keep on the shelf and read again years later

A humble warrior's tale

Fantastic read. Colonel Milburn shares his vast experience from 30 years of service in Marine Corps infantry and special operations. This book is not a "hero's tale" as so many other modern military books are, where the author tells of his various exploits and gallantry. Rather, this book is an informative journey through the last 30 years of the Marine Corps and the last 20+ years of conflict in the Middle East. Andy tells his story with many tragic details in a self-effacing manner that hides the fact that he truly is one of the heroes of our day. His writing style is one that can be enjoyed and digested by all (not just former military) and he explains the jargon and "wonk" of military operations making it an easy read. This book is a must for anyone interested in the evolution of our military during this very long war.

Required Reading for Tactical & Operational Level Leaders

Col. Milburn's When the Tempest Gathers will soon be considered an essential account of military operations over the past 30 years as well as an invaluable, self-effacing repository of hard-won lessons learned. Having served in many of the same locations, mostly in Iraq, and in similar capacities, albeit at lower ranks, I found myself agreeing with the sentiments expressed while still drawing innumerable lessons from Col. Milburn's cogent descriptions of his service and engaging writing style. The principled leadership described therein provided me dozens of the high-caliber management and mentorship examples that I and other readers can and will undoubtedly benefit from. I think it likely that any reader can further profit from revisiting the numerous passages you will find yourself highlighting, underlining, or committing to memory when encountering ambiguous or disorienting situations. A truly momentous case study of what drives Americans of all backgrounds to serve as Marines and a foundational work on how best to lead them or any organization through the most trying of times. Bravo Zulu Sir & Semper Fidelis!

Excellent Lesson In Practical Leadership from the Tactical to the Operational Level of War

Andrew Milburn is gifted with the written word and his love of literature comes out in the lessons he presents within the work. Within the first 10 pages of the work you are introduced to a man that spent his entire adult life leading Marines and from the description you would never guess that this man would reach the pinnacle of SOF combat leadership as a CJSOTF Commander as he is not the typical candidate for a Marine Officer.

This is a great book that tracks Andy’s life journey through the Marine Corps. He notes how he is blessed to have experienced leadership at all levels and he goes into great detail on the highs of leading combat forces in Somalia as a Lieutenant to the emotional lows of managing the loss of an entire sub-element in a training exercise. Whether he was taking part in a fire fight on a presence patrol, assuming charge of a challenged MTT or taking command of a Marine Raider Regiment you are given incredible insight into the mind and experiences of a leader.

This is an incredible journal on leadership that should be required reading for anyone seeking to be a Marine Officer.

Mandatory read for all USMC and USA officers, especially serving in the Combat Arms officers MOSs

Exceptional, MUST READ Book by Andy Millburn. Although we never served in the same unit, I have known of Andy since the Basic School(1990). As a 2ndLt at TBS, I saw him as that anomaly of a "White haired Brit", but he was revered back then and throughout.

This book must become a mandatory read for all Marine Corps and Army officers, especially serving in the Combat Arms officers MOSs. It is a one for one replacement to David Hackworth's, "About Face".

Andy's tactical and operational experience and commentary cover the scope of Basic to Advanced Tactics study and discussion.

It is incredibly well written and very easy to follow. His insight into the tactical to strategic mistakes in the past 30 years are point on without debate, most especially in the FID and Advisor mission.

Whenever he is complete with his duties in Ukraine leading the Mozart Group, I hope he is pulled in by a Think Tank or the DoD to be "THE" Senior leader and writer of Strategy and Policy if not a Presidential cabinet or Advisor position. It is a more current substitute, although much lengthier read, to "Message to Garcia". Cannot say enough good things about this book.

Andy lived this story and earned the right to tell it.

I could not put this book down once I started to read it. Now I refer to it often when I prepare presentations on leadership.
