Review “A highly informed, yet intimately personal celebration of one of our most important living writers.” — NPR “A nimble gloss on Dylan’s lyric genius.” — USA Today “A masterstroke of literary detective work . . . and an exciting examination of an artist’s enigmatic mind.” — Booklist (starred review) “Masterful, fun, passionate, learned, profound, and there’s nothing like it. Thomas shows why Dylan deserves his Nobel—and how he hearkens back to, and enlists, the classics. Fantastic reading, full of gems.” — Cass R. Sunstein, Robert Walmsley University Professor, Harvard University From the Back Cover Classics professor and renowned Dylanologist Richard F. Thomas makes a compelling case for moving the iconic singer-songwriter out of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and into the pantheon of classical poets, based on his wildly popular Bob Dylan seminar at Harvard. Features & Highlights

  • “The coolest class on campus” – The New York Times
  • When the Nobel Prize for Literature was awarded to Bob Dylan in 2016, a debate raged. Some celebrated, while many others questioned the choice.  How could the world’s most prestigious book prize be awarded to a famously cantankerous singer-songwriter who wouldn’t even deign to attend the medal ceremony?
  • In Why Bob Dylan Matters, Harvard Professor Richard F. Thomas answers this question with magisterial erudition. A world expert on Classical poetry, Thomas was initially ridiculed by his colleagues for teaching a course on Bob Dylan alongside his traditional seminars on Homer, Virgil, and Ovid. Dylan’s Nobel Prize brought him vindication, and he immediately found himself thrust into the spotlight as a leading academic voice in all matters Dylanological. Today, through his wildly popular Dylan seminar—affectionately dubbed "Dylan 101"—Thomas is introducing a new generation of fans and scholars to the revered bard’s work.
  • This witty, personal volume is a distillation of Thomas’s famous course, and makes a compelling case for moving Dylan out of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and into the pantheon of Classical poets. Asking us to reflect on the question, "What makes a classic?", Thomas offers an eloquent argument for Dylan’s modern relevance, while interpreting and decoding Dylan’s lyrics for readers. The most original and compelling volume on Dylan in decades, Why Bob Dylan Matters will illuminate Dylan’s work for the Dylan neophyte and the seasoned fanatic alike. You’ll never think about Bob Dylan in the same way again.

Happy Birthday Bob!

Yeah it’s nice to discuss his relevance. Even though he wasn’t looking to be the voice of a generation and be pigeonholed the way he was you know what is said about branding; it’s not what you say you are it’s what your customers say you are (don’t know who said this but credit to them not me). Happy birthday Bob! You have meant so much to so many for various reasons. Just enjoy it. Let it go go. You did good.

Soooooooooo Boring

The author of this book clearly wrote this book just to brag about how much he personally knew about Bob Dylan. Very boring. Very poorly written.

worth skipping - the most boring book written about Dylan

It is noteworthy that they can teach a class on Dylan at Harvard, but it must be the most boring class of all if this book is any sign. There are some analogies to other artists along the way, but this is a frankly boring description of a fascinating artist. It really breaks apart at the end when the author was trying to add pages. For a fascinating artist like Dylan this is one worth skipping - try instead Scaduto's book, Chronicles, Greil Marcus's work or a number of other excellent biographies.

One of the most essential Dylan books

I have read about 20 books on Bob Dylan and this is one of the very best. It's an essential read for fans because it contains the most detailed examination to date of Dylan's 21st century output. It's an especially deep dive into the Modern Times (2006) and Tempest (2012) albums, offering the best analysis of Dylan's use of intertextual appropriation that I've yet come across -- but it also contains fascinating insights into some of Dylan's recent interviews (especially the "Rome interview" from 2001 and the 2012 Rolling Stone interview) as well as his Nobel Prize acceptance speech and lecture. I read this right before Rough and Rowdy Ways came out and the fact that RARW contains more references to the "classical world" than any previous Dylan album made me seriously wonder if Dylan had read Thomas' book and been inspired to move even further in that direction.

A lot to take in

An interesting, yet at times difficult to understand read. I'm not sure if I completely agree with a lot of what was written, and I feel like some of the references drone on and on. But it is interesting to read someone else's point of view on Bob Dylan's writing!
