Description

From Booklist Negotiation-expert Fox presents a road map for understanding our inner self and then avoiding common traps as we interact with the world around us in business and everyday life. She explains her seven-step approach, including “The Big Four Team” in all of us: the “Dreamer,” our internal CEO who creates possibilities, and sets strategic vision; the “Thinker,” our internal CFO who clarifies perspectives, analyzes data, and manages risk; the “Lover,” our internal VP of HR who cares about people, feels emotions, and manages; and the “Warrior,” our internal COO who brings about performance, takes action, and reaches goals. The author also describes our “Transformers,” the inner “Lookout,” who signals what is going on inside us (feelings and impulses); the inner “Captain,” who coordinates the Big Four and chooses our best next move; and the “Voyager” in all of us, who seeks growth through new experiences and opportunities. Fox reports that the ability to “lead yourself” is today’s new leadership requirement, and this timely book is a must-read for library patrons interested in all levels of management. --Mary Whaley “ Winning from Within is bound to change forevermore the way leaders are developed. Leading and living are a series of constant negotiations. Consider what goes on during your typical week: Can you influence your client to accept your proposal? Will you persuade colleagues to give you the resources you need to finish your project? How will you ask your neighbor to switch carpool days so that you will finally have time to get to the gym? According to conventional wisdom, a "win-win" outcome is the hallmark of success. However, until now, advice on getting there has overlooked one crucial element. It turns out that the most important negotiations you have, the ones that drive the impact of your leadership and the quality of your life, are the ones you have with yourself . What does negotiating with yourself mean? It's what happens when you want to stay at the office, but also want to keep your promise to the family to get home in time for dinner. Or when one side of you votes to roll the dice and go for your dream job, while another worries about paying the mortgage. It's what you do when one part of you wants to give your relationship every chance to work, while another knows that this time it's really over. When you're of more than one mind about what to do, negotiating with yourself is an essential skill. Should you say yes or no, or should you stall for time? Offer an olive branch or lay down the law? Speak your mind or hold your peace? When you know how to win the tug-of-wars inside of you, then you can "get to yes" in lasting and transformational ways. With honesty, humor, and fresh ideas, Winning from Within gives you a clear road map for knowing your inner world and a method for sorting yourself out. Whether you're struggling with a difficult customer or arguing with your spouse, by understanding what leadership and negotiation expert Erica Ariel Fox calls your "inner negotiators," you'll learn to turn breakdowns into breakthroughs. With the insight and tools to get out of your own way, you'll find new avenues to realizing your dreams. Erica Ariel Fox teaches negotiation at Harvard Law School. She is a cofounder of the global leadership and change firm Mobius Executive Leadership and a senior advisor to McKinsey Leadership Development (MLD). A highly sought-after expert and speaker, she helps teams in trouble, inspires audiences, and supports businesses seeking transformational change. She also provides leadership training to public-sector organizations and through executive education courses. Is change really about' winning'?

Winning from Within: A Breakthrough Method for Lading, Living and Lasting Change by Erica Ariel Fox is a book about negotiation. Every day, whether we are aware of it or not we face a series of negotiations. Each of these effects other aspects of our lives. Fox combines Western psychology with principles from Eastern philosophy and shows various ways to balance our lives in that process in order to win or "gain mastery:.

I read a great number of self-help books. I have to say I was a little disappointed with this one in that the format was really rather scattered. The reflection questions and exercises really just were really not something I had a great deal of patience for and so I admit I skipped over them. I really wanted to like this book, but could not get into it.

I'll be re-reading this a lot

I know I read Erica Ariel Fox's "Winning from Within" because I was on a time crunch to get some things done for work and because I had a stack of other books that I needed to read as well and there were a few that were kicking my butt in order to finish.

Also, I'll confess, that there were parts of it that just hit close to home.

That I didn't give this book my full attention is the only reason why it isn't a 5 star because once I re-read it, I'll probably will give it a 5 star because I'll be underlining and highlighting and writing notes in the margins because even as I was distracted on other things, I was still going, "Oh man, that's me. I need to try that. Yikes. Is that why I haven't been given that project at work?!"

So this book is going with me to work so I can read again. And again. It isn't a feel-good book of roses and sparkles but a book on how to recognize from within what a person needs to improve and have real change.

Insightful and Practical - Personally & Professionally

A must-read for anyone who wishes to truly "lead from within", from one's "self" - thus stopping the madness of feeling helplessly governed by external forces.

An EMPOWERING book for one's life - both personally and professionally! Fox offers the whole package in an entertaining, easy to understand, "real-life" way that delivers practicality and profound wisdom. Recognizing and connecting with one's "inner-negotiators" will not only change how one approaches life, but also how one begins to create what is possible for oneself, whether it be personally with family and community, or in the workplace.

My Dreamer sees lives changing dramatically with this book!!!

Winning from Within is a book on SELF-negotiation... and conflict resolution... though not readily apparent.

Winning from Within is a book on SELF-negotiation.

A pearl of wisdom I found particularly relevant was the story of Erica learning to cook from her mother. They were discussing why to start with a recipe but then to modify the recipe to make it better, the recipe was just a general guide.
" 'A meal becomes good by starting with quality instructions. It becomes great when you add a quality chef.' (Erika's mother) Beyond getting the right ingredients or dutifully following instructions, to become a "quality chef" - in cooking and in life - we need to reach beyond the fundamentals and learn to adapt, improvise, and innovate as life demands. We need to use not only our utensils - our "best practices" and techniques - but also our inner strengths and deeper wisdom. The key to mastery, to achieving greatness, in the kitchen or in the boardroom, is not your toolbox. It's YOU."

Using this principle is how I read thousands of research articles and medical journals to then piece together a path to help my husband not only overcome end stage heart disease, but to also cure his 18 year battle with Type 2 diabetes along the journey.

I also resonated with the tips on corporate morality of doing what is right, particularly within larger corporations such as explained when the founder of Kyocera was quoted "..the right thing to do as a human being are the things that your parents and teachers told you that were right and the things which are inherently right to everyone." If more of corporations were run with this mindset, there would be far fewer issues within our society!

On a personal level, now that I'm more aware of the performance gap between my optimal reaction and current reaction to a given situation, I am focusing more on improving myself particularly in key target areas. This is possible by seeing my role in the results I'm getting - a vantage point or perspective we should all strive to take more notice.

Winning from Within is not a book to read over a single weekend. Rather, it is prime to read a chapter or two each week, then ponder and assimilate the information, review and adapt it for everyday situations. It is also a book to come back to periodically, review any further changes we need to make to ourselves, particularly after a stressful encounter and realize how we need to adapt ourselves to better handle conflict in the future.

Here's "a practical and accessible set of tools that explains how...to broker deals with others [and] make peace with ourselves"

The title of this review was excerpted from William Ury's remarkably helpful Foreword as he frames the abundance of valuable information, insights, and counsel that Erica Ariel Fox provides. Ury adds, and I agree, "Until we can understand and engage with ourselves, our deepest aspirations will elude us - from meeting our potential for professional performance to creating a secure and sustainable peace in the world." That is to say, gaining self-knowledge and understanding of others are interdependent as are gaining serenity about one's self while developing a rapport with others.

There are dozens of excellent resources for knowledge about what Ury characterizes as the "outer game of negotiation" with negotiation broadly defined. What Fox offers is a rigorous and comprehensive exploration of the "inner game of negotiation." Hence her use of the metaphor of a personal journey of discovery, one that correctly suggests the need for a "map" and a crystal clear sense of destination.

These are among the dozens of business subjects and issues of special interest and value to me, also listed to indicate the scope of Fox's coverage. I should add that Fox devotes much of her attention to seven resources that as human functions, domains, capabilities, etc.

o How to uncover your performance gap
o The functions of your "inner negotiators" (i.e. Dreamer, Thinker, Lover, and Warrior)
o How to work effectively with them ("The Big Four")
o How to become anchored in your psychological center of gravity
o How to see your Dreamer's vision
o How to understand your Thinker's insights
o How to feel your Lover's heart
o How to carry and (when necessary) use your Warrior's sword and shield

"Transformers" to engage during the journey:

o How to awaken your Lookout
o When to engage your Captain to steer
o How to gain new knowledge and understanding with your Voyager

Overall strategic objectives

o Recognizing strengthens to develop further
o Managing weaknesses during initiatives
o Making better decisions
o Increasing emotional intelligence
o Nourishing mutually beneficial relationships with others

At least implicit throughout Fox's lively and eloquent narrative is her conviction that the more we help others to achieve personal growth and professional development, the more others will help us to achieve ours. It is important to keep in mind, also, the etymology of the word "negotiation": from Latin, it literally means to collaborate on reaching an agreement to resolve issues, usually business issues. The aforementioned "inner game of negotiation" to which Ury refers involves negotiation with one's self. That must precede engagement in "the outer game of negotiation," reaching an agreement with others to resolve issues.

Thought Provoking - I liked it!

I was surprised at the negative reviews on this one. I found it thoughtful and I enjoyed the ideas in here. A friend recommend this because he found it very helpful in organizing himself at work by just using these ideas after years of struggling. He said he had read so many self help books but none had resonated with him the way this one did. I found the author very knowledgeable and the ideas empowering. I recommend it.
