Wonder Woman Still Going Strong, And The First Born Crashes Onto the Stage

This third volume continues the hot streak for one of the best Wonder Woman series ever. Wonder Woman continues to navigate the thorny, sordid world of the Greek gods and searches for Zola's child, Diana's half brother. This volume is in some ways repetitive of the last, in the sense that this again deals with another fetch quest that forces Diana to ally with gods and journey into a corner of the mythos to retrieve someone important (and the repetition is the only reason I mark such a stellar book down to 4 stars). But there's a lot that's new here--the introduction of Orion and the New Gods, the mentor-mentee relationship between Ares and Diana, and of course, the major villain, The First Born. The First Born, Zeus' eldest, unnamed child and Diana's older brother emerges from the depths of the earth on a quest for vengeance against the gods who imprisoned him. In a lot of ways, this volume is his own origin story, catapulting him on the scene when the gods are at their weakest. Zeus is gone, Hera is cast out, and The First Born is ready to tear his way through anyone and anything that stands between him and his goals. He's a fierce destructive force of nature rising in the background of Diana's story, and this volume gets you ready for their inevitable clash. Again, this series is by far the best Wonder Woman tale out there, and the rich world it builds is so fun to read. More than worth the purchase and one of the New 52's best.

An incredible book that continues Wonder Woman's quest to save Zola's baby and prevent the prophecy.

In the last books, Hermes has taken off with Zola's baby, the one everyone believes will take Zeus's place and kill one of the gods for the prophecy says that a child of Zeus will do just that. The other gods are looking to stop Wonder Woman because they believe she may be the one the prophecy pertains to. Hera has lost her powers and her place in Olympus and has found a place with Wonder Woman and Lennox, her brother.

Lennox decides that they need help from other children of Zeus like themselves to help in their fight to find Zola's baby. One such child is Siracca, the wind, who hears everything and might be able to hear Hermes speak and find out where he is hiding. But she isn't too fond of Wonder Woman right now and the two must work something out if she is to get the information from her that she needs.

Siracca isn't the only child of Zeus that they consult. When they consult the other one they meet an unusual man. Meanwhile, in Antarctica, a man has been unearthed by scientists from the ice and he is not happy that seven thousand years had passed since he last walked the earth. War is also up to something and can't be trusted. The colors of the ice dragons' blood are quite vivid and the scene with Siracca is incredibly done in such a windswept way. As usual, the scenes with the gods are tinged with red, to perhaps indicating their bloodlust? I really enjoyed this volume of the series and it stands up well against the other two. I can't wait to see what's in store for the next one.

The search

Volume 3 of Wonder Woman consists of one long arc: Wonder Woman's search for Zola's baby. As a result, she gets more and more dragged into the world of Olympian politics and Zeus's extended family.

The number of individual characters in this story is approaching a critical mass, but Azzarello seems to be a master of juggling them. This series contains most of the Olympian Pantheon, four demigods, a new god from Apokalips, as well as Diana herself. The character pairings and witty dialogue never slow down, and I wasn't bored once while reading. I hope the rest of the series stays this good.
