Description

From Publishers Weekly It really is all about you and improving the way you present yourself, declare the husband-and-wife Beckwiths ( Selling the Invisible ) in this refreshing career primer. Unlike many similar books, this is not an autobiography masquerading as wisdom. The Beckwiths stay out of the book except when Harry's experience as a bestselling business writer and head of a marketing firm or Christine's as an award-winning speaker and cancer-survivor is directly relevant. Instead, they offer practical advice for effective and memorable interpersonal interactions. Above all, they stress communicating with brevity and clarity—suggesting that every document be cut in half before sending and giving 30-minute speeches in 22 minutes. Their own prose is pared down to short, readable lessons on topics like the importance of making good first impressions and the secrets of successful selling, which they describe as the artful handling of information, presented with forethought and enough passion to be persuasive without making anyone uncomfortable. Readers at the start of their careers or in need of an inspirational brushup will find much of use. (Mar. 1) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Stanford, Beckwith is an internationally acclaimed speaker. He is the bestselling author of five books, which, collectively, have been translated into twenty-three languages.

Not what I expected.

There's no through line in the book. It's a collection of anecdotes, arranged into short chapters. Each chapter or section shares a different moral or theme. Interesting, but not the kind of book you can get sucked in to. That said, it is the kind of book you can read one short section at a time or pick up and open to any particular part. Read that part then reflect on that section for a day, week, or month. Return to the book at another time and read another section.

Great Title - Lousy Book

Rambling. unoriginal and frequently self indulgent, this volume does prove that a catchy title can sell books. It also reinforces that you can not judge a book by its cover. Spend your money elsewhere.

Practice what you preach

The book makes some good points. However it is filled with contradictions. An example is in toward the end of book, they say don't talk about politics. But in an earier relatively large section, they 'describe' how the democrats generally nominate intelligent candidtates, the republicans nominate those which are easy to like (implying the republicans lack the knowledge base of their counterparts). Irrespective of your opinion on the issue, if they don't take their won advice, why should anybody else.

Don't bother.

Compilation of biz platitudes. Be yourself, etc. Really not even worth flipping through. Burned it for heat.

A rehash of past books

It's an okay book, but it's basically a rehash of Beckwith's prior books plus a touch of "What Color is Your Parachute." If you don't already have any of these on your shelf, this book is a worthwhile buy,

Personally, I still recommend to my students "What Color is Your Parachute."

BEST BECKWITH SINCE SELLING THE INVISIBLE

Harry and his wife Christine have put out what I think is Harry's best book since SELLING THE INVISIBLE. Like "Selling" it has sharp marketing advice in Harry's value-added, witty and straight-to-the point style. I've been a marketing consultant for 25 years. I use Harry's books as a quick reference source. So an added bonus in this book is the detailed Table of Contents. It allows you to quickly scan the contents - find the subject of interest - and go right to the page you need. I should share consulting fees with Mr.Beckwith since I pass along his advice so often. Bottom line: YOU, INC. is a "must have" for any business owner or marketing professional.

Common wisdom with a lot if intelligent inside.

Nice and brief reading. Some ideas of everyday wisdom we all practice, but at the same time an innovative way to implement them. I enjoyed reading it.

Very interesting

I just finished the audiobook. This book has a ton of excellent ideas and action items that can be used immediately. Many of the concepts involve thinking outside the box and defying conventional wisdom. Mostly it's about making personal connections with people and considering their point of view. As someone who's new to sales and trying to sell my company's services, this book gave me some ideas on how to relate to people. I suspect the audiobook might be a better way to get the full effect and emotion of the ideas presented in the book. I'm off to listen again.
