About the Author As a child, Tyler Dilts dreamed of following in the footsteps of his policeman father. Though his career goals changed over time, he never lost interest in the daily work of homicide detectives. Today he teaches creative writing at California State University in Long Beach, and his writing has appeared in the Los Angeles Times , The Chronicle of Higher Education , The Best American Mystery Stories , and numerous other publications. He is the author of A King of Infinite Space and The Pain Scale , the first two novels in the Long Beach Homicide series. He lives with his wife in Long Beach, California.

Features & Highlights

  • On a sweltering September night, Long Beach Homicide Detective Danny Beckett is called to a grisly crime scene at the mouth of the Los Angeles River. A defenseless homeless man has been burned to death by three teenagers with gang ties. The suspects are already in custody, and the evidence is overwhelming―but when one suspect’s brother is targeted for murder, Danny starts to think there may be more to this seemingly clear-cut case. Obsessed with discovering the true identity of the victim, a gentle vagrant who may have been hiding a tortured past, Danny and his team start to uncover a high-reaching conspiracy that puts them all at risk―and threatens to open new wounds that could cut even deeper than Danny’s old ones.

I love it. LOVE IT LOVE IT

I read this series in complete reverse, so A Cold and Broken Hallelujah was the first LBH book I read. I love it. LOVE IT LOVE IT!!! I found the world and the characters very compelling and interesting. I think Mr Dilts books are well written and I like that they try to bring a little realism into the fold, so it's not like CSI. I found it compelling that the main crime of this book was not about the criminal, but the victim. That was a brilliant yet subtle move that aids to the atmosphere not being bleak per se, but melancholy.

I am early anticipating his next book.

Excellent. Tyler Dilts has nailed the detective/mystery genre where so many authors fall short. His protagonist, Danny Beckett, is refreshingly human, who brings a genuine level of concern to his investigations. In a case he takes rather personally, he goes above and beyond his job duties to bring closure to the case, but mostly to himself. A very emotional take on the hardboiled detective novel. This is as good as anything Connelly as ever written.

Hold onto your seat!

A Cold and Broken Hallelujah is a real page turner. Keeps you on the edge of your seat. A very appropriate title for this book that deals with a fallen world.

Tyler Dilts hits the mark again.

As a long time reader of crime fiction I'm so glad I stumbled into his Long Beach Homicide books. His main character Danny Beckett is a piece of work. I love the pop culture references and the fact that this guy is a rock music fan, especially Springsteen." A Cold and Broken Hallelujah" is very well written with just enough spins and turns to keep you guessing and totally hooked until the finish line. He deserves a wider audience and his books are as good as anyone writing in this genre. I look forward to further installments.

'Bout average.

Meh. Maybe it is too realistic for a crime "thriller", too much like real life in that it plods along, gets hung up on small everyday details. I appreciate the detective's concern for the victim and his drive to discover the identity, not sure I agree with his handling of DNA results but I guess that is what makes the world go round. The writing is crisp and clear the plot about average so I will probably not be going back for the first two in the series. I often wish there were a 3.5 star category since that is where this is. Often that would deserve a nudge up to four but this one just did not move for me.

One of the best series currently out there. Great for those with chronic pain !

With each book in this series, I find myself more entertained and drawn in. Most books I read that deal with a lot of descriptive info regarding the characters and living conditions of their lives, tend to lose my attention. In the case of this series. I find that Mr. Dilts, makes these an important and exceptional portion of the book.
A good deal of the books descriptions of dealing with chronic pain by its primary character is of particular interest. Though the reader finds out and knows why he is in pain. There are many people in this world such as myself who live with chronic pain that can't be explained. Mr. Dilts, explains in great detail the turmoil of living with this pain and the daily struggles of how best to defeat it without it affecting those around him.
This is a book that is concise in the matters of police procedural methods. It is in some ways a predictable outcome. As are 90% of police novels. However, the development of the characters is very much real life. The ending is one that only makes you anxious for the next installment. From the characters you like to their protagonists. This is a book series that keeps your interest solid.
