Features & Highlights

  • How can a shattered ex-cop follow the rules when he’s no longer sure of them?
  • For sixteen years, Ben Shepard loyally served the Long Beach Police Department. Then he took a bullet to the head, and his life was shattered. No one expects much of anything from him anymore―except his father, an old man receding into a fog of his own. And except maybe his tenant, Grace, who’s been a warm and friendly constant in his and his father’s bleak lives.
  • Until the day she vanishes.
  • After an official investigation stalls, Ben moves forward on his own. But stepping into Grace’s past―and all she was hiding―is a dangerous move for a man who can’t trust his memories from one day to the next. The deeper he gets, the more he has to question whether he’s being driven by the gut instincts of a suspicious former cop or by paranoia.
  • Recognizing what’s real can save Grace’s life. If only he can trust himself to do it…

I didn't want this book to end.

I didn’t want this book to end, though the author brought it to a very satisfying conclusion. I kept reading it slower and slower, not wanting to leave the small world of Ben and his father. Ben is a Long Beach PD detective who, years before, was shot in the head: his father has dementia. They take care of each other with great tenderness and affection. When their tenant goes missing, Ben is called into investigating her disappearance, exercising great ingenuity to disguise his disabilities, and those of his father’s. The writing is so fine, the characterization so unusual, the suspense almost unendurable.
My heart just broke for both Ben and his father, and I’m not really a sappy person.

A Wonderful, Sensitive Story.

This was a fascinating story. I grew up around nursing homes, coming and going with my mother who was a nurse. It was a pleasure to see people who had lost who they were responding to our positive reinforcement of who they had been before dementia and illness stepped in. I see that clearly here. Ben's feelings when he is doing what made him while before his injury. Peter's reaction to the plane that saw him wave. They are damaged people who found a way to deal with the damage. They find support and comfort in each other. It was a wonderful book that I couldn"t put down. Just like all the other Long Beach Mysteries. It is more than strengthening spent reading it.

I used to live in Long Beach, and his descriptions of the city are unbelievably accurate. I read his books when I am homesick for the Long Beach life style.

Not quite what I expected. It's slow going but I'm determined to finish it.
