Avoiding Commitment

Wow, K.A. Linde can write her butt off! That is how I feel about Avoiding Commitment overall. Just so well written. Avoiding Commitment was one of those books where I was screaming at the characters to act one way and they just never listened to me, but I still couldn't help but totally love them and I got completely sucked into the story. There is just something about Lexi that even though I wanted to shake her most of the time, I was still on her team 100% the whole way though.

That is a testament to K.A. Linde's writing, I think. I was on a rollercoaster ride of emotions while reading this book. Jack drove me nuts sometimes, but then he would what felt like some really honest moments and holy cow, he was even drawing me in and making me believe in him. I went back and forth with what I wanted more than a few times.

Lexi is pretty funny. She has zero control over her desires, which I didn't particularly like about her, but she just has this something about her. I couldn't help but like her. Maybe it was that whole law student bond. I will say this, she does lead a very exciting life for someone in a top ten law school. I am a little jealous. Haha! Lexi and Jack have this super strange relationship. It seemed pretty destructive for me. Honestly, I really liked Ramsey. I hope he shows up in the next book because he seems pretty genuine.

The writing was set up different. I really liked the style of it. The chapters would alternate between the "present" and then the next chapter would be 6 years ago. Then it would go back to the present and then the next chapter would be 4 years ago. And so on. Basically the chapters alternated between the past and the present and eventually the times met. It was a kind of cool way to see everything in Lexi and Jack's relationship.

Avoiding Commitment was like watching reality tv for me. It was drama filled and juicy. Something I just couldn't turn away from. It totally sucked me in and I loved it all. It was raw and gritty and seemed so real, and kinda dysfunctional. But I loved it all. I am definitely going to check out more of K.A. Linde's books.

*Disclaimer- I got a copy of the book for free in exchange for my honest review. I was not compensated for my review.

Completely Frustrating, Yet Addictive

I'll admit. I was very, very reluctant to read Avoiding Commitment. I mean, it's a book about big fat cheaters. But...

Avoiding Commitment is a tough read. Did I like it? Yes and no. Did I have fun reading it? Almost never. These characters were frustrating beyond belief. Did I want to hurl my kindle the hurl my lunch? Yes, and sometimes. Did I find it addictive and fascinating? I sure did.

I did find the writing to be a little "off" for me. The issue was head-jumping. The book is told through Lexie's point of view, but then mid-scene the narrative would start describing what Jack was thinking. Also, there were a few times that it completely went to someone else's pov, mid-scene, without notice. But overall, I was able to handle the writing style.

Here's the deal. If you don't like to read books with frustrating characters who almost always make bad decisions, this probably isn't for you. Avoiding Commitment is a book about messy people and messy relationships. I will say that by the end, Lexie finally started wising up. Some.

And yes, I dove head first into book two, Avoiding Responsibility.

not a romance novel

I was disappointed with this book. It is not a love story that touches your heart. It is just about two people hurting each other all the time. Good writing but sad story.

WOW.......Speechless!!!

This book.....wow.....I loved it!! However, the way Jake used Lexi like he did throughout the whole book, and I can't ignore the fact that Lexi kept falling for Jake's crap, just really bugged me. I can't really say what drew me to turn page after page, but I guess I just really wanted to COMMIT to finishing it.

I can say, once I reached the end, I really liked the outcome. It turns out that a good novel does not always need to end with the girl getting the guy or the guy getting the girl. Lexi, I think finally grew up at the end of this novel only after realising that not all your dreams can or should come true.

I'm glad Alexa was able to find the strength to say ...

***3.5 Rating***
The main characters in this book are very frustrating. For some reason, I was intrigued to find out how this story would end. I'm glad Alexa was able to find the strength to say no to Jack and Ramsey. I was hoping Jack would come to his senses and realise that Alexa is the one he wants and would fight for her. This book kept me entertained enough to finish it.

So freaking good!!

Omg! I think I must be crazy! Crazy to think I've ever really had my mind officially blown before now! I'm completely in aww. I can't believe how mentally twisted this book is! It was extremely hot but push and pull and I actually understood it all! Everyone has that one guy that they couldn't say no to, the guy that had them so crazy that they would ruin everything good in their lives for just one touch, one taste, one moment with this person no matter the cost. This book will twist you up and spin you out. You will never be the same after reading this book. Some of you may even be able to relate to this and for some this book will open your eyes and you will see what's really going on. This is a life changing book. I was completely caught up in the spell and omg I really hope there's another book I'd love to see what became of Lexi and definitely Chyna and even Jack and Ramsey. I was absolutely floored at the end my jaw hit the floor I think this just may have been the best book I have ever read!

Good story, but so exhausting!

Avoiding Commitment was a trainwreck. No, not cause of the writing - the writing was good. But the characters? They all need some help, lots of help. I didn't really like any of them, but I don't think you were supposed to. I mean, they were selfish, manipulative liars. *sigh* Jack and Lexi had one of those toxic relationships. you know the kind: great sex, some denied emotions, enough baggage to fill an airport. There were a few times I rooted for them, but overall....no. I wanted them to just stay away from each other.

First we have Lexi. She gets a phone call at the crack of dawn from her ex, Jack. Jack wants her to fly down south to meet his current girlfriend, Bekah. Seems Bekah is having some trust issues that she thinks meeting all of Jack's exes will fix. I'm screaming at this point (figuratively, of course!) "No Lexi - don't do it!!!" But she does. She totally didn't listen to me. It doesn't matter that they haven't spoken in almost two years, and the last time they saw each other it ended on bad terms. Ladies, most of us have probably had that man in our lives, that one you can't say "no" to even when you know it is going to cause you nothing but heartache and trouble. Well Jack is Lexi's man. This is at a point where I still liked Lexi. But that changed, a lot. And then it changed some more.

And then we have Jack. Jack is a jerk. I could really stop the description of him there. He is the gorgeous playboy who never gets caught. He's the guy with the Midas touch. He's the arrogant, cocky, douchebag who somehow gets everyone to kiss his butt constantly. I didn't like him at all through this story. I've dated "Jacks" in my life. I was not impressed with any of his manipulation. And there were some points of this story that he was just downright cold. Nope, not a fan.

So yeah, Lexi goes and gives in. She meets Bekah who is like a sweet southern belle, with a bit of duality in her. She's like that sickly sweet frosting that gives you a stomach ache after eating, and you then realize it wasn't as great as you thought it was. Yep, that's Bekah in a nutshell. I didn't buy the fact that she wanted to meet Jack's ex's. I didn't buy the fact that Jack was okay with it. And I didn't buy the fact that Lexi went along with it. Who the hell are these people?? And then I took a couple days to think about it. I've known these people. Maybe not this situation specifically, but I certainly have known these drama magnets in my life.

Throw in Lexi's bff, Chyna, and Bekah's brother, Ramsey, and a few other minor characters and you have a complete cast of everyone you don't really want to know. I did like Chyna, but she wasn't in the story as much as I would have needed her to be, to redeem Lexi. And Ramsey... *sigh* I wanted to like him, but I just don't trust him.

And yet I couldn't put the book down. I wanted to. They made me so mad. Crossover feelings, lying, cheating, manipulation, game playing... this book had everything. It's told in present tense, and then there will be a flashback chapter to a telling moment in Jack and Lexi's history. I did really like the format, it felt like it fleshed everything out without overloading me on a bunch of side information that I didn't need.

I think this book will really appeal to some people. I thought it was terrific on some points. It really evoked some strong emotions in me, like disgust with the characters lol. But you don't have to like the characters to like the book, know what I mean? Sometimes you just love to hate the characters, and this book has it in spades. But the story, itself, was pretty good too. Not every story is a love story. Not every person is in love and does right by the person who loves them... some people... well, they are just Avoiding Commitment.

Loved it!

I give this book a very strong 4.5. The only reason I didn't go 5 stars, was because I wasn't a fan of the change between past and present times. I don't mind that idea of going back and forth, but I felt so caught up in the present that when it would switch to the past, I had a hard time remembering where it left off. I have never has such strong emotions while reading a book. I loved Jack and then HATED him so much. I felt for Lex during this book so much! I can't wait to read the second book!!

engaging book

the book had me at the first page. It's very much engaging and thrilling to read. Much more, my heart always ached as the scenes before me unfold. I hated hateeeed Jack and Lexi for all the wrong choices they made and even if I also adore them, their relationship was really unhealthy. Though, I liked how K.A. Linde wrote the book, alternating with the past and present, and with Lexi's 1st person POV most of the time but occasionally, we get to glimpse from the others' too. Even if there's that kind of almost-omniscient POVs, K.A. Linde was still able to maintain the kind of puzzle/mystery of what will happen next or what really happened in the past that made the people of the present who they are. a truly entertaining read. though I must warn you that this is an ADULT book. no youngsters allowed!
