Description

From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 1-This picture book is filled with wit and musings on what it means for a young girl to be beautiful. The illustrations evoke a feeling of uniqueness, independence, and strength, defining beauty through diversity, talents, and passions. Girls are playing football, eating messy oranges, digging in the mud, laughing at themselves, and flying like birds on swings. Drawings, vignettes, and square panels provide balance to the text. Simple sentences and phrases stir the imagination. Bold line drawings and rich colors bring a sense of wonder and personality to each girl. The wordplay is clever: "Beautiful girls know all about makeup," as the girls dress up as pirates with fake beards and mustaches. Each wears a pirate hat, carries a sword, and navigates her own boat on the high seas. "Beautiful girls…have a smart style" refers not to fashion sense but to a sense of discovery and exploration, as each page shows a young woman investigating bugs and plants and other girls building a robotic car or creating a science experiment. VERDICT This simple yet empowering story, best suited for one-on-one and small group sharing, is infused with examples of how beauty is defined in many ways.-Melissa Smith, Royal Oak Public Library, MI The tone is bold and forthright, as it needs to be to counter the ubiquitous other messages that tell girls how to behave, and the illustrations boast a multiracial cast and even girls playing basketball in wheelchairs. While this will appeal most to girls and their parents, there's no reason why boys should not enjoy it, too. -Booklist Stacy McAnulty is the author of Mr. Fuzz Buster Knows He's the Favorite, 101 Reasons Why I'm Not Taking a Bath, Excellent Ed, Beautiful , and Brave . Message too subtle for recommended age range

The illustrations are fabulous, showing diverse girls being strong, brave, curious, adventurous, smart, etc. Combined with text such as "Beautiful girls know all about makeup," (showing a group of girls dressed up as pirates, with face paint), the book is supposed to break down these sorts of stereotypes that we may associate with what is expected of girls. However, the text, read at face value, only instills these stereotypes in young girls (age 3-8, the recommended age range), many of whom in this day and age have probably not even heard them yet and aren't aware enough of the subtle message that the illustrations are trying to convey. Kids that young are way too literal. My nine-year-old flipped through it and asked, "Mom, why does the book say you have to do all these things to be beautiful?" I had to explain to her that the author's point was to turn the stereotypical messages on their head. She ended up "rewriting" the book with her own captions on sticky notes, such as "All girls have their own style." It was way better after her edits. We give it two stars because the illustrations are so good and it ended up being a great teaching tool, however inadvertently.

One Star

I get it, but it's still just overemphasizing beauty.

Representation for Little Girls!!

Beautiful is an adorably illustrated book that challenges gender expectation for girls. Written by Stacy McAnulty and illustrated by Joanne Lew-Vriethoff it shows girls of an array of skin color, body types and abilities doing fun activities that society often portray as boy activities, such as sports, playing pirates and playing in the dirt. I specifically loved the representation of girls in wheelchairs both playing basketball and dancing. It was recommended by Amy Pence-Brown, our local Body Positive activist, who teaches and writes about body image, among other things! I highly recommend this gorgeous book to girl moms and boy moms alike. This book seems geared towards preschool and Kindergarten, with very little words, but could be used as a discussion starter for any age.

BEAUTIFUL is really beautiful

Yes, BEAUTIFUL is really beautiful. This book is the perfect gift for every little girl worldwide and maybe some big girls too.
What a wonderful presentation of inclusion of all diversities, shapes, sizes and "non perfection".
A perfect example of how we should celebrate self whatever we look like and whom ever we may be.
Kudos to Stacy and Joanne.

For all little girls

I love this book. We had it at daycare and I got it for a special little girl's 5th birthday as she learns to read. It's such a wonderful message in this book and depicts girls of all colors and types running around and being strong, independent, adventurous, explorative, creative kids - not necessarily just pretty girls. Love it.

intelligent, strong

I completely understand the point the author was attempting to make but the message is lost in the words. Let's also tell our girls that they're capable, intelligent, strong, etc. The cover lured me in but the text was a let down.

Beautiful Indeed!

SERIOUSLY important book that kids will enjoy so much they won't realize it's important. We need to teach both girls AND boys that beauty truly comes from the inside. It's what you can do and who you are, not what you look like. I got this book for my daughter and she is 13 years old, as I think this book is for all ages. I love that the illustrations feature girls of diverse race, ethnicity, and interests. It's a winner!

This is a brilliant pairing of text and illustration that takes to task typical girl stereotypes and what it truly means to be beautiful. I'm purchasing several copies for the young girls in my life and suggest you do the same!
