Dark fantasy for teens and older; A rough gem (no pun intended.)

While this is the first published novel by Ursula Vernon, when I cracked it to read in the car while waiting for someone I became so engrossed that I resented the arrival of my friend. I finished the book in a day not so much because I couldn't put it down as because when I did put it down I kept wanting to pick it up again.

But enough of that:

This dark fantasy is set in a world with intelligent human-animal species--such as our heroine's rescuer and self-appointed guardian, a traveling dog-soldier with a soft spot for the innocent in trouble. The two become friends and he looks after her in a way that a father would--teaching her how to defend herself, how to make a fire, and sundry other skills that will come in handy as she accompanies him on his own journeys until her own situation can be sorted out.

There are other animal-human species--and even elves--that the story has to introduce, but with only a couple forgivable snags these pass smoothly with the story.

Wonderfully, the world lacks even a hint of a sugar coating. People are still people, and most of 'em would sell you as soon as look at you. And those aren't even the villains!

Delightfully, our heroine--in defiance of all stereotypes--reacts to tragedy like people (rather than fictional characters) do, and her softer emotions are almost flawless.

The second book in this two-book set is due out in Spring of 2008, and I can't wait.

Well written and exciting!

I had previously read Ms. Vernon's children's book, Nurk, and was delighted. This book is not for children, but I am once again delighted. The story is familiar, but with some new twists. The writing is what I most enjoyed. Ursula has a wonderful way with the written word, and shows it here to great advantage. The tribulations of a young girl with nothing left in the world, and nowhere to turn, become a fascinating trip through a world where dog soldiers are sworn to protect and defend the helpless, and protect they do. The girl begins an adventure to a magical city where danger awaits at every turn. I can't wait for the next book to continue the journey. If you are a fan of fantasy and adventure, you must read Black Dogs Part One: The House of Diamond.

Great story but what is with the ridiculous price tag?

I read this book back when it was still posted on Elfwood. I took one star off my review because from what I understand it's been largely edited since then and is not the same... but I don't know what the differences are because I can't afford to shell out hundreds of dollars for half of a book.

I'd love to read it again and I think of this story all the time, it was a great story... but why the hell is it hundreds of dollars for a copy? Where else can I get a hold of this so I can read it? :(
