Description

From School Library Journal K-Gr 2—Charlie the Ranch Dog is concerned. His family has brought a calf inside the house. He knows that "Mama and the kids" will give the calf lots of tender loving care, but when he feels they have forgotten to attend to his needs, he ends his day dreaming about "a time when a dog could lie on his own bed. A time when a dog could get a bath and a belly rub from time to time. A time before this silly ol' calf ever showed up." Charlie's quiet tolerance is rewarded by morning, though. He receives a thank-you lick on the head from the reinvigorated calf. Charlie's enviousness is easy to understand when looking at deGroat's realistic illustrations. His longing for attention is reflected in his facial features and body language. The watercolor-over-digital-art paintings make readers feel at home. Drummond includes a child-friendly recipe for Egg-in-a-Hole at the back of the book.—Tanya Boudreau, Cold Lake Public Library, AB, Canada It sure is nice to be King of the Ranch. Just ask Charlie! His days are filled with belly rubs, bacon, and Mama's special tender loving care. But then his daily routine is interrupted when a new baby shows up! All of a sudden, everyone's attention is on her, and not on Charlie. They tuck her in, feed her dinner, and give her their tender loving care. What is a ranch dog to do? In this heartwarming tale by Ree Drummond—The Pioneer Woman herself—Charlie discovers that even with a new baby at home, there's enough love to go around and that being a big brother is an even bigger job than being King of the Ranch. (Well . . . almost as big!) Ree Drummond is the author of seven #1 New York Times bestselling cookbooks in the Pioneer Woman Cooks series, the New York Times bestsellers Frontier Follies and The Pioneer Woman: Black Heels to Tractor Wheels , and many bestselling children’s books. Disappointed

I am usually a fan of the "Charlie" books, but not this one and here's why. I got towards the end of the book, only to find two pages with no words. The previous page showed a fed-up Charlie howling at the calf, and then when the words pick up again, Charlie is being rewarded with attention and belly rubs! Sorry, that is NOT the message I want my child to get from this book - you make a fuss because you are upset and you get rewarded? I thought for sure that I missed something and that those two pages accidently didn't have words, because there had to be a better resolution on those two pages, but it appears not to be the case. I was hoping this would end more similarly to "Where's the Bacon?" Very disappointed with this book in the series.

Disappointment

My grandkids (and I) love the Charlie books. This book was a disappointment. When I received it and read it I thought it was missing pages. The story didn't make much sense on the last couple of pages. I went to the bookstore to check and, yep, they're book was the same. I gave it to my granddaughter and when her dad read it the first time, he was also confused and went back through the book, certain there were pages missing.

Good book!

The pre-schoolers that I shared this book with loved the story and being able to what happened on the pages without words themselves. They also loved finding the little chipmunk on each page. Then seeing the real Charlie, WOW! This was my first Charlie book and I'll be adding more to my book bag.

Love this dog!

Charlie has to get used to the new calf Abigail, learn to share his things with her, and wait for attention now that there's another little one getting the attention. Good for explaining the arrival of a little sibling who can't do all the grown up big sis or bro things the older one can. We love that Charlie is humorous too. We read this a lot.

My 2 year old granddaughter loves these books. We watch the Pioneer Woman and she loves to see Charlie and Walter and all the animals. We had a basset hound too so she can relate. These stories are so charming. She is always asking me to "read Charlie the Ranch Dog stories."

We have a Basset Hound named Charlie. We happened to have named him before the book series came out so it was a neat to see the series. Anyhow, we have many of the books in the series. I enjoy them because they are pinpoint on how our Charlie acts. I don't try to take a message from them and simply see them as a reflection of our Charlie. Some readers have had concerns over the message and the ending of the book. Our Charlie acts quite the same. If a message was trying to be presented then it may have missed the mark. If the true side of a basset hound, Charlie in this case, is what was being presented, then it was spot on, at least for our basset.
