Description

From Booklist Popular blogger and cookbook author Drummond shares the story of her courtship and marriage to her husband, whom she refers to as Marlboro Man. Though Drummond grew up in Oklahoma, she never imagined shed end up there for good. After four years of college in Los Angeles, Drummond was only making a pit stop home before moving to Chicago. A chance encounter with a devastatingly masculine cowboy in a local bar changes everything. Though several months elapse before Marlboro Man calls her, the spark between them ignites as soon as they start dating. A rancher with deep roots in the land he works, Marlboro Man isnt going anywhere, which means Drummond has to decide whether, to be with him, shes willing to give up her dream of moving to Chicago. By the time Marlboro Man proposes, the decision is made, and Drummond prepares to marry the love of her life and discover what being a ranchers wife will entail. Charming and bright, Drummonds story will be an inspiration to those who despair of finding old-fashioned, lasting love. --Kristine Huntley #2 New York Times Bestseller — New York Times #2 Wall Street Journal Bestseller — Wall Street Journal “Fans of Drummond’s blog and cookbook will eat up this breathless blow-by-blow chronicle of falling in love with Marlboro Man, a.k.a. her husband, and adapting to life on his ranch. . . . Generous dollops of self-deprecating humor contribute a welcome tang.” — People “Charming and bright, Drummond’s story will be an inspiration to those who despair of finding old-fashioned, lasting love.” — Booklist “The Pioneer Woman is perfect reading for Valentine’s Day, whether you’re celebrating a lasting love or still looking for The One. Even the most cynical of readers will be charmed by Drummond’s hilarious story of being won over by a cowboy.” — BookPage “An affecting new memoir . . . charming and romantic. Riotously funny . . . Drummond is . . . sure to have readers in tears and in stitches. In a word: delightful.” — Publishers Weekly "That's when I saw him—the cowboy—across the smoky room." I'll never forget that night. It was like a romance novel, an old Broadway musical, and a John Wayne western rolled into one. Out for a quick drink with friends, I wasn't looking to meet anyone, let alone a tall, rugged cowboy who lived on a cattle ranch miles away from my cultured, corporate hometown. But before I knew it, I'd been struck with a lightning bolt . . . and I was completely powerless to stop it. Read along as I recount the rip-roaring details of my unlikely romance with a chaps-wearing cowboy, from the early days of our courtship (complete with cows, horses, prairie fire, and passion) all the way through the first year of our marriage, which would be filled with more challenge and strife—and manure—than I ever could have expected. This isn't just my love story; it's a universal tale of passion, romance, and all-encompassing love that sweeps us off our feet. It's the story of a cowboy. And Wranglers. And chaps. And the girl who fell in love with them. Ree Drummond is the author of seven #1 New York Times bestselling cookbooks in the Pioneer Woman Cooks series, the New York Times bestsellers Frontier Follies and The Pioneer Woman: Black Heels to Tractor Wheels , and many bestselling children's books. Her award-winning website, The Pioneer Woman, was founded in 2006 and showcases her cooking, photography, and anecdotes about country life. Her top-rated cooking show, The Pioneer Woman, premiered on Food Network in 2011, and in the years to follow, Ree launched The Pioneer Woman magazine, a well-loved line of kitchen and home products, and a restaurant, store, and other businesses in her hometown of Pawhuska, Oklahoma. She lives on a working ranch with her family, horses, cows, and pups. Read more

Eh

I do enjoy PW's blog, and while I don't visit it as often as I used to, I did read the story in its entirety on her website, and was disappointed in the amount of new material in the book. Yes, Ree does say on her website that she is adding new material, but it's not enough (in my opinion) to warrant the price tag.

Further, I don't think it's really that well written or fantastic. Yes, it's a very cute story, but what wife doesn't have a great story of meeting her husband? Even if it's something as simple as, 'oh a mutual friend introduced us', everyone has ups, downs, laughs, and tears to share with friends and family. Overall, I don't think it's that great of a read, and I bought it thinking that a hard copy would mean some extra editing and, again, new material.

Wasn't a PW fan before and not going to be one now...

My husband has gotten into watching the Cooking channel so one day when I happened to watch TV with him, we stumbled upon the Pioneer Woman show. I'd never heard of her and her recipes seemed very unhealthy and Paula Deen like but I was still fascinated by someone who would call herself "Pioneer Woman." Who is she? Why does she consider herself a Pioneer? Does she milk her cows and churn her own butter? So one quick wiki search later, I was impressed with her personal bio and decided that I wanted to know more about her and how someone in today's modern age could end up becoming a home schooling, blogging, ranch wife. I got this book hoping it would be an account of city girl meets country boy, cultures clash, differences ensue but are settled after much tears, drama and life lessons. Unfortunately, the only impressions that I got after reading this is that Ree Drummond really likes Ann Taylor jeans, her husband could basically do no wrong in her eyes and she sweats profusely. I won't even go into how badly written this was. I think previous reviewers have covered that. I made myself finish reading hoping that things were building up to a more realistic account of adjusting to country life, etc.. but sadly no. If I wanted fluff, I'd read a real romance novel and be entertained with good writing. This was a total waste of my time and money and I don't anticipate reading any additional PW's accounts anytime soon.

Cowboy Phase Gets Me Here

You have to take this book for what it is and it's a woman's account of how she fell in love. I think it's a sweet story. I agree with others that she could have used an editor. If I'd read her blog, I might have taken away a star, but since I'm coming to Pioneer Woman fresh, I like it a lot. I think she and I are about the same age so I understand some of her angst about going back home (which is what I did) and falling in love just as she'd determined to be on her own (yup, same here). Her life seems to be about that adage that God laughs when you make plans and has you take the unexpected path.

Light, sweet story

Like many people, I've followed Ree Drummond on her blog, The Pioneer Woman. She's hysterically funny and I enjoy many of her anecdotes and recipes. This story was originally published in installments on her blog and I read it then and found it entertaining. As a book, however, it falls a little bit short.

Ree is head over heels in love with her husband and I love that she is honest about it. It's incredibly refreshing in these days when so many place little value on marriage and fidelity. She chronicles the story of how she and Marlboro Man met, courted and married and all the little ups and downs in between. It's romantic and funny and surprisingly clean.

It's also heavy on the cheesy, Harlequin-esque heaving bosoms-type romance. At times it reads like a teenager's diary, rather than a story of a twenty-something woman. We get a lot of weak knees, strong biceps and heavy sighs. Marlboro Man is absolutely perfect with no flaws whatsoever and a bit too good to be true.

I think it could have used some better editing and I expected it to have been a little more fleshed out. I also think having both of their accounts, rather than just Ree's first-person perspective would make this a richer story. But still, it's an honest, funny and forthright account of the love story of a well-known and well-loved blogger. Fans of The Pioneer Woman will love it. Others will find it a light, sweet escape.

Wish I Had My Own Marlboro Man

Have to say that this book isn't my typical read, which is historical romance, but this book is right up there with one of the best reads I've had in a long time. Ree's descriptions, insecurities and humor kept me up reading half the night. To me, this a truly great love story and I only with that I could find my very own Marlboro Man. It may have sounded like a fairy tale to some, but to me, this is the stuff that all girls dream about...finding the perfect mate. Thank you, Ree (and Marlboro Man), for giving me a fairy tale to believe in. Five Stars is really not enough...I want to give hundreds!!

Fun Love Story!

I'm somewhat surprised by the bad reviews on this book, I thought it was a riot. I actually didn't read it, I listened to it on an audible device. Ree Drummond herself did the narration and that fact made the story even more fun. I didn't read the blog prior to listening to the book so I didn't know what to expect. Ree is a pampered city slicker that meets a down home, real cowboy and falls in love. this is the story about how she adapted her city woman ways to meet with the cowboy culture. A truly fun love story! Highly recommend.

Sweet but....

This book was very sweet, but way toooo mushy mushy. I have a hard time believing that life was so perfect...even if you are head over heels for you man. I am 100% drop dead head over heels for mine, but we have days where we argue and fuss and that is what makes us love each other even more. In her book she doesnt mention them arguing very much and it is like too perfect or something. I was just so giddy over the read at the start and wanted to believe that everything she was saying was true, but the more I read the less I believed it was so perfect. I actually think that the read would have been a little better if we'd seen some arguments along the way, something to build their realtionship on and make it stronger.

Great Beach Read!

I work in a Library and first discovered this book because a patron had placed a hold on it and it arrived for her to pick it up. It was actually the wonderful COVER that grabbed my attention. Yep, you CAN usually tell a lot about a book by it's cover and I must admit that even as a long-time Library-worker it is almost always the cover that attracts me to a book.

Having said that, I wasn't disappointed. I'd not heard of "Pioneer Woman" at all so dove in to this delightful romantic romp with absolutely no pre-judgement and had an enormously great time. I felt like I was reading a 'real life' romance novel, which is basically what this is.

Several times I laughed out loud for a LONG TIME (esp. the child-birth scene, certain parts were hilarious). I actually also came close to crying several times. ALL the time I was routing for this romance to succeed.

Ree Drummond writes with a deft, breezy and witty style which keeps you turning the pages and not wanting to put the book down. She definitely makes you want to go out and find a cowboy of your own. However, it is very clear that 'Marlboro Man' although handsome and strong, is also a man of great integrity and caring and definitely worthy of Ree's adoration. Ree herself is a riot- sort of a cross between a southern belle and a valley girl, trying to keep herself beautiful for her man in that way that you do when you are trying to maintain that great first impression but sometimes meeting with little catastrophes that keep her humble. This is almost a story of a girl growing into womanhood, stumbling along the way but motivated by a deep love for her man.

A real delight, this book, makes me want to check out her blog and hope for a part 2- life with children, trying to maintain the deep love on a working ranch with much to do...must be pretty interesting for sure.

Ree!

There was a time in my life where I was a college graduate, working at a pizza shoppe, searching for a teaching job, looking for love, and living with my grandparents. During this time I discovered Ree Drummond and her blog, The Pioneer Woman. Everything I made came from her site. Everyday I checked her site. I was mildly obsessed. I no longer work in a pizza shoppe, I am a high school art teacher, my grandma has passed away, and I am still looking for love. Like all things, they have a season. While I still check in on the Pioneer Woman from time to time, I am no longer obsessed. One thing that I will say, is that I really liked this book. It was fun to read about her life and everything that lead to her having a successful blog. This is a nice and quick read. I find her to be pretty funny and that came across in her writing. I would recommend this book!

Tasty leftovers

The Pioneer Woman is a fun blogger, and Black Heels to Tractor Wheels was the ongoing story that she told on her blog about meeting, dating, and marrying her husband. On the blog, most (all?) posts were accompanied by a relevant recipe - her husband's favorite steak, or the comfort dish her mother always made, for example - but these were pulled out of the final story, which made her clear references to the foods themselves seem almost out of place. And, as some of my friends noted, avid readers of Drummond's blog will have read ninety percent of the content already, which is somewhat disappointing. I'd recommend this book to anyone who likes non-professional food writing who hasn't read The Pioneer Woman yet.
