Description

Review “Stirring and moving: more fine work from a versatile, gifted writer.” ― Kirkus Reviews “The seamless plot is compelling, making this an altogether deeply satisfying work of historical fiction.” ― Booklist “An entertaining and engaging read.” ―Historical Novel Society “ From These Broken Streets is utterly compelling. War time Naples is brought vividly to life as Roland Merullo weaves together the lives of ordinary people, each heroic in their own way, struggling to survive in this beautiful but ravaged city…A moving and memorable story.” ―Lindsay Jayne Ashford, bestselling author of The House at Mermaid’s Cove “An utterly captivating story of occupied Naples, From These Broken Streets is a tour de force of literary suspense. Merullo beautifully portrays his characters’ longing for spiritual and physical peace, [and] their urgent desire for human connection and redemption, all the while ratcheting up the tension until it’s almost unbearable. Once I cracked open the first page, I could not put this powerful novel down.” ―Katrin Schumann, bestselling author of The Forgotten Hours and This Terrible Beauty About the Author Roland Merullo is the bestselling author of more than twenty works of fiction and nonfiction, including Once Night Falls ; The Delight of Being Ordinary ; The Talk-Funny Girl , an Alex Award winner; Vatican Waltz , a Publishers Weekly Best Books of 2013 pick; Breakfast with Buddha , an international bestseller now in its twentieth printing; Lunch with Buddha , selected as one of the Best Books of 2013 by Kirkus Reviews ; Revere Beach Boulevard , named one of the “Top 100 Essential Books of New England” by the Boston Globe ; and Revere Beach Elegy , winner of the Massachusetts Book Award for nonfiction. Born in Boston and raised in Revere, Massachusetts, Roland attended Brown University, where he obtained a bachelor of arts in Russian studies and a master of arts in Russian language and literature. A former Peace Corps volunteer, he’s also made his living as a carpenter, college professor, and cabdriver. Important historical insight

I've heard about the Four Days of Naples for a while now. Although this is fiction, it allowed me to visualize and get a better feel for the time period than what I've already read. There are a lot of characters, and it took me some time to get a feel for them all, but it was well worth it!

It is based on true facts

I liked the way the author, Merullo, handled the story and depicted the events and the people's reactions
during WWII Naples. His story telling made you feel you were there and could feel the tension and horror
of the people and what they had to go through. Merullo holds your interest from the first page to the last,

A Good Pandemic Diversion

An easy read, although less of a “thriller” than promised.
