Description

"This colorfully illustrated collection celebrates iconic American cooking with generally easily reproduced dishes that will delight people for a family dinner or for a special event . . . Batali makes every dish look like great fun, and it's impossible not to share his enthusiasm. His popularity alone will make this a required purchase . . . but the variety of content will be welcomed by even those who aren't already fans."― Mark Knoblauch, Booklist "Culinary details, as well as Batali's essays on his two-year journey across the U.S. (which include further recommendations), set this volume apart from its peers . . . Batali fans and collectors of Americana will appreciate this reliable and well-curated compendium."― Publishers Weekly "There's not an ounce of pretense amid the 250-plus dishes that comprise the celeb chef's latest offering. Instead, you'll find Batali's talented take on old-school regional fare."― Modern Farmer Mario Batali counts 26 restaurants, ten cookbooks, numerous television shows, and three Eataly marketplaces among his ever-expanding empire of deliciousness. His cookbooks include the James Beard Award-winning Molto Italiano: 327 Simple Italian Recipes (2005) and his popular cookbook, America -- Farm to Table . Batali appears daily on ABC's The Chew , a daytime talk show on ABC that celebrates and explores life through food. He and his co-hosts won their first Emmy as Best Talk Show Hosts this year.

Features & Highlights

  • Mario Batali's delicious deep dive into American Regional cooking with 250 recipes--from San Diego Fish Tacos to Boston Cream Pie.
  • Over two years in the making, with Batali searching for truly delicious dishes from all corners of the US, this definitive cookbook features the best America has to offer. With over 250 simple recipes celebrating the treasures of the state fairs and the dishes of the local rotary clubs and ethnic groups. Batali has interpreted these regional gems with the same excitement and passion that he has approached traditional Italian food. Covering the Northeast/New England, the Mid-Atlantic, the Gulf Coast, the Great Lakes, the Heartland, the Southwest, and the Pacific Coast, this book will share everything from the BBQ styles of Texas, the Smokeys and the Carolinas, to the seafood soups from yankee Boston to the spicy gumbos of the Gulf Coast and the berry pies of the Pacific Northwest. All the dishes are very simple and do-able--from Philly Cheesesteaks to Marionberry cobbler. And while Batali uses recipes passed down through the generations, he also shares hints on what he would add to the recipe to take the flavor up a notch. This is THE American cookbook you will want to own.

Batali doing regional American favorites with humor and style

For any Batali fan, this book is a fantastic addition. I loved his Farm to Table book, and this one is no different. Again, delving into the cuisine that makes American food so interesting and diverse, Batali has searched far and wide to bring the best regional and sometimes even local USA dishes, from Texas BBQ, seafood soups of New England (howza bouta chowdah?), deep spicy Gulf foods, simply all over the Country finding the best of the best.

Is this houte couisine? No, but these are the tried and trues which have lasted generations, and Batali takes those generational recipes and adds his hints on how to make them truly extraordinary. Breezing through it I can see at least ten recipes that I already want to try out.

Sprinkled with the usual humor and flair for fun, this book is a super addition to the kitchen library and a must for Batali fans. But boy, those clogs!

I like simple, delicious comfort food

I am not a sophisticated cook; I like simple, delicious comfort food. This book looked like it was right up my alley. Whenever I get a new cookbook (a couple of times per year), I sit down with a hand full of book marks, thumb through the book and mark the pages of the recipes that I want to make first. Usually there are a half dozen or so that look so good that I want to make them right away. No joke, I bookmarked about 75% of the recipes in this book. The dishes look amazing. I just got the book yesterday, and will make something this weekend and then probably another 6 or 8 recipes over the Holiday. I'll adjust the rating based on the results if necessary. But so far, I am really excited about this book!

Another Great by Mario

This is a very different book from Mario's other book's. It is a cooking tour of the US and brings together many local favorites. Very well illustrated and filled with lots of great things to make.

To many weird recipes that we would not even try. I should have researched it more thoroughly.

A Greatest Hits List of American Cuisine

Wow, this is a must-have cookbook for any library, from beginner to advanced. It features the most popular recipes from various American regions and the one's I've tried to date are delicious and chef-worthy without being too complicated or having lengthy ingredient lists. There is a photograph for every recipe and the commentary is clever. As to the prior reviewer who says it has too many "weird recipes," I couldn't disagree more--all of the dishes in this book are popular and recognizable (fried chicken, philly cheesesteaks, clam chowder). If I could only have one American cookbook, this would be it.

I love all the regional recipes

I love all the regional recipes. I like that he left the recipies just like they were given but, he also gave a suggestion for how to change it up. I feel like I'm really seeing the best of each region of our wonderfully diverse country. Mario for president! Let's all wear orange.

I should have been born Italian!

I should have been born Italian. Preferably with a relative like Mario who invited me over to eat regularly, but at least we have his books to enjoy, which is as close as I will get. I remember his 'Babbo restaurant cookbook' with the beef cheek ravioli dish. Mario now brings us USA dishes and adds his own Italian twist which is a magical combination! Delicious!
