Description

“Sensationally plotted, with a twist at the end that will leave you gasping for breath.”— The Daily Express (U.K.) “A fine psychological thriller…recalls the work of writers like Minette Walters or Thomas Harris.”— The Denver Post “[Readers] will find themselves entertained and surprised by the ending.”— The Stuart News/Port St. Lucie News (Stuart, FL) “There is a steely authority to the prose.”— The Independent (London) “Cornwell and her original heroine Kay Scarpetta are both back in top form.”— Birmingham Post Patricia Cornwell is considered one of the world's bestselling crime writers. Her intrepid medical examiner Kay Scarpetta first appeared on the scene in 1990 with Postmortem —the only novel to win the Edgar, Creasey, Anthony, and Macavity awards and the French Prix du Roman d'Aventure in a single year—and Cruel and Unusual , which won Britain's prestigious Gold Dagger Award for the best crime novel of 1993. Dr. Kay Scarpetta herself won the 1999 Sherlock Award for the best detective created by an American author. Ms. Cornwell's work is translated into 36 languages across more than 120 countries.

Features & Highlights

  • Dr. Kay Scarpetta, now freelancing with the National Forensic Academy in Florida, takes charge of a case that stretches from steamy Florida to snowbound Boston; one that at first appears as unnerving as any she has ever faced.
  • The teasing psychological clues lead Scarpetta and her team—Pete Marino, Benton Wesley, and Lucy Farinelli—to suspect that they are hunting someone with a cunning and malevolent mind whose secrets have kept them in the shadows, until now.
  • Predator
  • is proof once again that Patricia Cornwell has few peers with her extraordinary ability to entertain and enthrall.

I loved the early Scarpetta novels

Ugh. Just ugh. I loved the early Scarpetta novels, but something has been happening over the last few, and I don't mean just the change from past to present tense and from first person to third - which I hate, BTW. Cornwell has also started including chapters from the murderer's point of view, so there isn't even any mystery. The regular characters seems to be devolving, trying to see which one can be more obnoxious than the others. The action in this story comes at you from every direction, and if you truly want to follow what's going on, I suggest you take notes. After a whirlwind of ferociously unconnected plot twists, the ending is a letdown, and really doesn't tie up any of the loose ends, although by the time I'd finished the book, I really didn't care. Please, Ms. Cornwell, if you don't like these characters any more, stop writing about them and put us all out of our misery.

VERY DISAPPOINTING

Wow, this book is so disappointing. Like another reviewer said it's very confusing. It jumps all around and you lose track of who is who and what is going on and if you put it down you have to reread the previous pages to refresh you memory, it's that bland. When you are reading and get interested, all of a sudden
it changes characters, location and you're confused again.

I think I'll stick with Harlequin romance novels, at least those you can't put down
and they grip you!

worst in the Scarpetta series

Very difficult to read, and understand. Plots that don't make sense. This is one of, if not THE, worst in the Scarpetta series. Could skip this book, and it wouldn't interfere with moving to the next one.

Disappointing to say the least

As others have said, this is not on a par with any of her earlier works. Lots of loose ends and some distracting errors like saying one of the characters flew Blackhawks in 'Nam (impossible).
Ending came about as if she reached a page limit and just had to end it.

It's good, not great, and could have had more details.

I agree with a few reviews that point out how spotty the narrative is. I thought it was just me during the sections of the book that seem to have a time laps, but I am glad I wasn't the only one. I truly enjoyed the novel and have ordered several more of Patricia Cornwell's novels ( I am beginning the series). Despite the poor reviews I am glad I read the novel prior to reading the reviews because I like the storyline and the creativity.
