Description

Patricia Cornwell's most recent bestsellers include Red Mist, Port Mortuary, and Portrait of a Killer: Jack the RipperCase Closed. Her earlier works include Postmortemthe only novel to win five major crime awards in a single yearand Cruel and Unusual, which won Britains prestigious Gold Dagger Award for the best crime novel of 1993. Dr. Kay Scarpetta herself won the 1999 Sherlock Award for the best detective created by an American author. From AudioFile With a number of positions as a medical examiner behind her in previous novels, Kay Scarpetta now serves as a CNN analyst and does pro bono work for the ME's office in New York City. When the murder of a Central Park jogger is linked to the disappearance of a wealthy financier, Scarpetta begins to connect the dots. Narrator Kate Reading adds intensity with her multilayered characterizations of all four major players--Scarpetta; her husband, Benton, a forensic psychologist; her niece, Lucy, a computer geek, and her friend and associate, Marino, a tough cop. Darker than previous Scarpetta novels, this installment is encumbered by extensive narrative passages in which the only action is psychological. The point of view shifts among the primary players, and Reading adds appeal by delivering each section in a subtle version of the narrating character's voice. Very disappointing

I promised I would not read another P.C. book, but then my hubby gave me the audiobook of The Scarpetta Factor and so I read it. What a disappointment. Besides the dialogs being dull and honestly so technical sometimes they are hard to follow, the one who reads does an even more terrible work. Scarpetta's voice is so slurred and slow it's nerve wrecking. She constantly seems under the effects of some drug. The reader also tries too hard to imitate a NY accent which is absolutely fantastic when real, but lame when forced. Benton's dialogs are annoying not to speak of Lucy's screwed up life and the horrible voice given to her. Marino is probably the only one that still keeps the whole thing together. Cornwell has turned this group of people into a group of bitter, sad, angry, dysfunctional beings. Scarpetta seems to bear the whole world on her shoulder; it's all about her and her morgue and apparently there is nobody else that can do her job. She has no life or whatever life she has it's a burden on Benton. I wonder what they talk about when they actually talk; they don't even talk about their job. Honestly, how many more books like this will she still write? She hasn't had a good review in years. She has practically killed one of the best characters with her ergonomic chairs and her Italian cooking-and I am Italian. A piece of advice to the reader, before you are to read an Italian word-or any foreign word for that matter- I suggest you go over the correct pronunciation 'cause if Scarpetta is as anal retentive as she sounds, I am sure she would at least pronounce the words correctly.

The Scarpetta Factor

This book was okay, but not Ms. Cornwell's best work. The story line was a bit tedious and lacked
the author's usual excitement. Not exactly a page-turner, but okay if you're a Kay Scarpetta fan.

The Scarpetta Factor

I have read all of the Kay Scarpetta series books that Patricia Cornwell has written. I feel this one is one of the weakest story lines. I found it similar to stories past. I was a bit disappointed. That being said, I am a fan of Kay, Lucy and Marino and will continue to buy the books to see what happens next.

Scarpetta keeps getting better

The Scarpetta series keeps getting better and better. I read an interview where Patricia Cornwell revealed that a reader asked her if she didn't like her characters any more. Well, I surely like them now. The last two books, Scarpetta and The Scarpetta Factor make me cheer for the characters again, instead of watching them suffer in bitterness and disgust with each other. I feel fortunate to be able to listen to the audio book format and am drawn in by the narrator. I can hardly wait for the next installment. I hope there is even more in Benton's point of view. Keep writing these more human characters Ms. Cornwell, and please, more Benton.

Terrific!

The series is great. Patricia Cromwell is great at detail writing. She continues the plots from book to book as an ongoing personal saga of the characters.
