Description

Patricia Cornwell's most recent bestsellers include Red Mist, Port Mortuary, and Portrait of a Killer: Jack the RipperCase Closed. Her earlier works include Postmortemthe only novel to win five major crime awards in a single yearand Cruel and Unusual, which won Britains prestigious Gold Dagger Award for the best crime novel of 1993. Dr. Kay Scarpetta herself won the 1999 Sherlock Award for the best detective created by an American author. From AudioFile All the continuing characters in the Scarpetta series work together in New York City to solve several murders with weird pathology. Medical examiner Kay Scarpetta needs help from her husband, Benton, ex-FBI profiler; her computer geek niece, Lucy; a female prosecuting attorney; and Marino, Kay's estranged former police associate. Some of these folks, like Marino and bit players, are voiced distinctively; some, like Benton, are not. Kate Reading's talent is enlivening long (maybe overlong) conversations and injecting emotions into characters and relationships. Suspect Oscar Banes, a dwarf, is wounded in body and spirit. Mysterious Internet postings about Kay are venomous. A pathology report is read stiffly. And a celebratory lunch at Elaine's brings everyone together to close on an overall good performance. Bravo! A return to the storylines that make me want more!

I loved this book. You won't find any details in this review except that fact. Unlike some of the previous novels in the Scarpetta series, every knot is tied, every T is crossed, every I is dotted. Fantastic plot line, unique characters and just an all around great addition to the Scarpetta series. My only complaint? That it will be too long before we get the next installment!!! But I can't wait to read more. Thank you Patricia for a great ride. (I purchased the audio version, Kate does an excellent job as reader.)

Disappointing all around

I used to read Patricia Cornwell voraciously, until I "caught up" and turned to other things when I had read everything she had written. She had left my radar until recently, when I happened across this audio book at the local library. Perfect, I thought, it will be like inviting old friends back, but the reality couldn't have been further from the truth. Granted, part of my dislike stemmed from the reading - the male characters were horribly voiced, very stereotyped and heavy. The story itself was boring - disjointed, lots of backtracking, and seemed to take forever. At times it felt like a first draft, redundant and not well written. There were errors in continuity that made me wonder what other errors (typos) I might be missing by listening to the audio instead of reading the book.

I still recommend Patricia Cornwell as a good read - but skip Scarpetta. Start with her earlier stuff.
