Description

From Bookmarks Magazine It’s difficult to tell if critics’ reactions to Pride and Prejudice and Zombies should be characterized as praise or astonishment. Some reviewers treated the book as a delightful gimmick. Others found that, beneath the surface, the book actually constituted an interesting way of looking at Austen’s novel. Zombies answer certain puzzling questions: Why were those troops stationed near Hertfordshire? Why did Charlotte Lucas actually marry Mr. Collins? (She had recently been bitten by zombies and wanted a husband who could be counted on to behead her—of course!) But critics also pointed out that this parody shows that Austen’s novel has remained so powerful over time that even the undead can’t spoil it.Copyright 2009 Bookmarks Publishing LLC From Booklist This may be the most wacky by-product of the busy Jane Austen fan-fiction industry—at least among the spin-offs and pastiches that have made it into print. In what’s described as an “expanded edition” of Pride and Prejudice,xa085 percent of the original text has been preserved but fused withxa0 “ultraviolent zombie mayhem.” For more than 50 years,xa0we learn,xa0England has been overrun by zombies,xa0prompting people like the Bennets to send their daughtersxa0away to China for training in the art of deadly combat, and prompting others, like Lady Catherine de Bourgh, to employ armies of ninjas. Added to the familiar plot turns that bring Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy together is the fact that both are highly skilled killers, gleefully slaying zombies on the way to their happy ending.xa0Is nothing sacred? Well, no, and mash-ups using literary classics that are freely available on the Web may become a whole new genre. What’s next? Wuthering Heights and Werewolves? --Mary Ellen Quinn Jane Austen is the author of Sense and Sensibility, Persuasion, Mansfield Park, and other masterpieces of English literature. Seth Grahame-Smith once took a class in English literature. He lives in Los Angeles. Read more

The Bennet sisters are ready for action

In this spoof of the original book (Pride and Prejudice) Elizabeth, Mary, and the other Bennet sisters slaughter zombies as they go about their daily lives practicing in their dojo, visiting neighbors, going to balls, and looking for husbands. Having trained for combat in China, they are very skilled with their muskets and daggers. Their silly mother, Mama Bennet - desperate to marry off her daughters - is a hoot. In the end everyone gets what they deserve. It's an entertaining novel.

Was OK

I am a Pride and Prejudice expert. Can quote from the book. I bought this because I loved Abraham Lincoln Vampire Slayer. Not a vampire fan per se, however, loved it, I did not think that this was as good or did not work as well as the premise of vampires in the life of Lincoln. Still fun

Very unique!

My new favorite mashup book. One that I'll be reading many times over and over again. It just so happens that I like zombies AND Pride and Prejudice, so this one worked for me!

yeah it's still incredibly slow and tedious

So the book was a pretty cool idea. Take a classic work and fill in the "blanks" and try to make it as seemless as possible. Although the author's foreword describes the inspiration differently, I can only imagine an undertaking of this sort would have originated from either a progressive but cruel English teacher or a night of heavy drinking. Unfortunately, not all of the cool ideas we have when we're drinking play out as well in the harsh light of day.

Full disclosure...I am NOT a fan of Pride and Prejudice. While I generally enjoy reading and even have a few classics in my "best books ever pile", P&P is NOT one of them. I put a lot of stock into this book's claim of taking a classic and making it something people would actually want to read. Perhaps if I was more a fan of the original work, this would have been a fun remix, but if you're not a fan, don't expect this book to convert you.

Graham deserves praise for his audacity (thus the three stars). While other authors have stolen classic stories and re-written them, none have been as blanant and unapologetic as Graham. Graham does an excellent job of trying to maintain the flow and diction established by Austen; however, he really really really should have invested in a thesaurus. Referring to zombies as "unmentionables" is fun the first time. It may even be cute the tenth time, but when you read it on every single page it just becomes redundant. Other words received equal page presence--Dojo, Katana, Mr. Darcy--to name a few.

It might be worth a read for its original approach, but the cool factor wears off quickly.

take it for what it is

I am a jane austen fan, and I am also a fan of a good zombie movie or a bad zombie movie for that matter. I did like this book, but I like remakes of beatles songs as well. so what I am saying is if you are a die hard jane austen fan this book may be kind of offensive. just as my wife is a die hard beatles fan and can't stand it when other music groups remake beatles songs. if you go into it with the idea that it will more than likely make you laugh I think you will enjoy it. and if you have ever read the original pride and prejudice I think you will especially like the stand off between miss elizabeth bennett and lady catherine deburg, that was my favorite part.

What a Twist!

So this book is a classic with a twist! Zombie lovers will freak! I was truly amazed to the point of no return. As the author adds his creepy tale into the mix, he does not tread on the basic story line of Beloved Jane Austen, and that I am grateful! What a read! I am excited to read the Prequel, and of course Sense and "Sensibility and Sea Monsters".
