Exciting, fast-paced read

Deep Cover was an exciting, fast-paced read with an amazing romance between a man learning to love again and a woman learning to trust again.

For ex-Navy SEAL Cabe Moss, there’s nothing more important than his work at Eagle Securities. After the death of his fiancée two years ago, his personal life has been on hold and he puts everything into his work. When the man Cabe and his friends have been trying to take down for months leads them to a casino that’s the focus of an FBI investigation, Cabe is pushed to team up with FBI agent Amy Murray to go undercover. With lives on the line, Cabe and Amy try to keep focused on the case but the attraction between them quickly becomes undeniable.

Cabe is the character who from the start I was most looking forward to their romance. With Cabe’s fiancée Jess dying in the line of duty prior to the start of the series, I was curious what type of woman he would be paired with and how the author would have him work through his grief. He is fiercely protective of those he cares about, in part because of Jess’s death but also due to the death of one of his best friends in high school. Cabe has cut himself off from relationships as he doesn’t want to experience the grief of losing a loved one again.

Amy has known since she was a child and her mother disappeared that she wanted to join the FBI and help find missing women. Her mother’s disappearance greatly affected her life as well as her father’s and to this day she’s still dealing with accepting not knowing what happened. Amy is a recent transplant to the San Diego area as she was forced to leave her job in the Atlanta FBI office when she was sexually harassed by a superior and no one believed she didn’t ask for it. I admired her courage and willingness to stand up for herself in that situation.

Cabe and Amy have an immediate and obvious attraction to one another but because of their pasts, neither is willing to act on that attraction. I felt their reasons for not being together were sound and I liked that they weren’t simply some trivial reason to create tension. Once Cabe and Amy do finally get together, it’s a fantastic relationship built on trust and between two people who understand each other. Plus the sex scenes between them are amazing and very well done.

The plot in Deep Cover is in part tied to what happens in the first two books, so I would recommend reading those books before jumping into this one. While you could read this one on its own, you’ll definitely understand more of the backstory and motivation of the main characters if you’ve read the other books. I liked how the missing women case that Amy was working tied into Cabe’s investigation. The final showdown in the book was fast-paced with the perfect amount of action and I really enjoyed how the overall storyline wrapped up.

Deep Cover was a fantastic conclusion to the Love Over Duty series although I'm hoping this isn't the end and we'll get more books following other members of Eagle Securities in the future. I highly recommend these books if you're in the mood for a great romantic suspense series.

Nice Take

A nice balance of action, drama, and romance. Not your typical romance setting. I love the development of the characters and the progression of their relationships, but best of all is the broader story. My only disappointment in the book is the sloppy editing, with words missing or clearly not supposed to be there way too often for comfort.

Pulse-pounding

Scarlett Cole, where have you been all my reading life?

Let me start by saying I don't consider this a romance novel at all. It's not about love and pink fluffy things. Yes, the main characters are attracted to one another and they kiss, have sex and live happily ever after, but the story isn't about them precisely.

Deep Cover is one of the most exciting, pulse-pounding stories I ever read. If you're a fan on action thrillers, then you should definitely read this book.
If you want to learn about counting cards at Blackjack, or how to snap the cable ties from around your wrists if you found yourself bound, read this book.
If you're curious how an FBI agent, who goes undercover in a casino, and a former SEAL Navy, along with the CIA and all the other three-letter agencies work together to bring down a money laundering and women trafficking operations, read this book.

The plot is structured, the characters are strong and smart and there's so much action, that you won't be able do breathe or put the book down. This is far away from my usual readings and it's definitely not a pink fairytale, but I enjoyed it immensely.

It would be an absolute honor to have you as my guest on my blog too. Stop by anytime you want :)

Should read in order

I really enjoyed this book. It's adventures, secretive and entertaining. It's also sexy and sweet. Can be read as a standalone but would be better if you read the previous stories.

Prepare to be swept away!

I was originally introduced to Ms. Cole's writing though another on of her series, Preload, and want immediately impressed me about her writing is her ability to dive into darker topics and make it all real to her readers. It was through her writing that I discovered some of the issues and prejudice that members of Canada's First Nations undergo and how the foster care system works in that country. I was able to delve deeper into how some adults react after undergoing horrific abuse as a children. And I met some strong women who manage to help those they love heal and start to become whole.

DEEP COVER is the first that I have read in her Love Over Duty series and while the Cabe's backstory isn't as dark as some of the members of Preload, I found it moving and above all, real. He has always been attracted to strong women but that also means that he can lose them to danger. Now he has to learn how not to allow those losses to define him.

I really liked Amy though it boggles my mind how the daughter of a professional Vegas poker player can become a FBI agent. She hasn't had a spark of interest in a man since a supervisor sexually harassed her. And becoming attracted to someone that she is working with didn't please her in the slightest. Now just to keep that attraction from effecting their mission together.

I do recommend DEEP COVER as it has interesting and well developed characters, both primary and secondary, along with a storyline that will hold your interest. There is a tension both from their attraction and their mission that starts slowly and ratchets its way skyward as the story goes on. There are moments of humor gives readers a breather before the danger roars back into play.

I think that any of my readers who enjoy romantic suspense will really enjoy DEEP COVER. It does stand really well on its own though I do recommend starting from the beginning simply so you don't have to search up the backlist later. This book does deal with illegal gambling, and the sex trade of women. There are also some rather hot sex scenes and violence so consider yourself warned.

***I received this book for free from NetGalley in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own and not influenced by the publisher or author.

A badass couple !

This series is amazing because the author gives lots of useful details that make you feel totally "in the story". I'm pretty sure they could be very good movies. Everything about the investigation seem realistic, true.
Cabe lost his fiancé some years ago and we hurt for him. We see him struggle with his emotions. He's instantly attracted by Amy but didn't forget his first love. The subject is smoothly treated with respect for both the fiancé and Amy. I really liked his reflexion and the path of his feelings. I liked how he is with Amy. Protective, gentleman, hot, patient, understanding...
Amy is a badass! She fights her own battles, she fights her fears, she fights for innocent people... She's amazingly brave but human too. The reason she joined the FBI... i wanted to give her a big hug! Her #metoo story is smartly worked and i liked the way she dealt with it.
They make a perfect couple!!
That was a pleasure to see Mac and Six again. (Bonus: some funny scenes with the wedding preparations).
Another TBR by Scarlett Cole !

Worth a read

Missing women, money laundering, and chemical weapons.

Not to mention a sexy special agent of the FBI who collides with an equally sexy ex-Navy SEAL.

Suspenseful, steamy and worth a read.
