Description

From School Library Journal Gr 7 Up—The fourth installment to Chima's "Heir Chronicles" centers around two teens, Jonah Kinlock and Emma Greenwood. Ten years earlier, a massacre killed off all adults, leaving just child survivors known as savants, who are mutants endowed with skills that, once brought under control, can be used in ways to contribute to the survival of the community. Many of the them, however, require heavy medication and rarely live to adulthood. Those that die turn into shades, zombielike creatures that retain the memories of their past life and inhabit dead bodies. Jonah is a talented musician, enchanter, and trained assassin. His skin is poisonous and he can kill from a simple touch; his job is to rid the world of shades. Emma is also a talented musician, but unlike Jonah, she is not aware of her special abilities. The teens are star-crossed lovers with overwhelming obstacles blocking their paths. As Emma's world slowly converges with Jonah's, both of their lives spin into a chaotic downward spiral. Scattered with musical references throughout, the book also tackles serious themes of disability and discrimination. The cliff-hanger ending will leave readers restless for more. For those in need of a quick refresher, the author provides a series guide on her website.—Sabrina Carnesi, Crittenden Middle School, Newport News, VA From Booklist Someone is killing wizards and framing Nightshade, the secret organization whose job it is to track down undead souls and dispatch them. Jonah, a 17-year-old assassin for Nightshade, is also on the trail of wizard killers, but for a different reason: he wants to know who was behind the Thorn Hill disaster, where thousands of adult sorcerers and nearly as many children died. Meanwhile, teen musical genius Emma, in search of her sorcerer father, lands directly in Jonah’s path. He is smitten, but can he save her from those who think she knows the secret to Thorn Hill? There is plenty of background information in the interstices of this multifaceted narrative, but readers new to the Heir Chronicles series may occasionally have difficulty connecting all the dots. Intriguing plot and subplot teasers abound, and the book ends in a cliff-hanger that will have readers roaring for the next entry. Chima continues to excel at building tension and populating her well-told tales with new and returning characters we want to know better. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: It’s a big series with a big following. Author tour, book trailer, and more promise to keep the swords a-swinging. Features & Highlights

  • They called it the Thorn Hill Massacre—the brutal attack on a once-thriving Weir community. Though Jonah Kinlock lived through it, he did not emerge unscathed: like the other survivors  Jonah possesses unique magical gifts that set him apart from members of the mainline guilds. At seventeen, Jonah has become the deadliest assassin in Nightshade, a network that hunts the undead.  Emma Claire Greenwood grew up worlds away, raised by a grandfather who taught her music rather than magic. An unschooled wild child, she runs the streets until the night she finds her grandfather dying, gripping a note warning Emma that she might be in danger. The clue he leaves behind leads Emma into Jonah’s life—and a shared legacy of secrets and lingering questions.  Was Thorn Hill really a peaceful commune? Or was it, as the Wizard Guild claims, a hotbed of underguild terrorists? The Wizards’ suspicions grow when members of the mainline guilds start turning up dead. They blame Nightshade, bringing tensions between the groups to a head.Racing against time, Jonah and Emma work to uncover the truth about Thorn Hill, amid increasing concern that whoever planned the Thorn Hill Massacre might strike again.

"The Enchanter Heir" - Title is misleading

Spoilers (In case you haven't read the first 3, but if you're reading this then..?)

--

The Warrior heir title makes sense, because Jack is coming in to his role as the only one left besides Ellen, and the book makes the world spark major change that leads in to the next. Huge change, world changing. The Wizard Heir is about McCauly who is also the center of world changing events, and does them himself. The Dragon Heir is even more so, these three books keep major themes and the "heir" part make sense because they become basically the most centered of their weir and the most powerful.

...The Enchanter Heir.. Is basically a separate novel of those three, set in the same universe. In this book the main character does little to nothing, and it all seemed like a hasty back story with no real material. Thorn hill, cool.. The premise is leading us up to find out what really happened.. Wizard heir was paced well and we knew by the 3/4 and last of the book, this one still in the dark. We have a "hero" that kills people because of what happened there, but doesn't do much else besides play music and kill people. "Administrative roles" Let's add filler and hop around letting everyone know what he does until the end..

Sulking and just falling in love with a girl that's mysterious and obviously will be the center of everything. Nothing is solved, accidents happen but nothing happens to fix them.

There are so many things that were just opened and never closed, and just seems snaked in so we have to buy the next book. It follows the pacing of a trilogy with little action. I came to expect the Heir books to be a solid stand alone novel, and sure this one can stand alone, but solid? Nothing major happens, it's just a dragged out love story.

Meh.

Doesn't deserve the title of the book, should be more like

I really enjoyed the original 3 books

I really did not like this book. I feel like it wasted my time and added nothing of consequence to the original series.

The new characters are annoying and underdeveloped. Everyone introduced is a musician and has no family, but that is about the extent of what we learn about them.

The main plot built up with filler and back story until the final page and had no climax what-so-ever. If you plan on continuing this series, I would recommend waiting until the 5th book in the series is released. This way you can avoid the uncomfortable ending, and hopefully the disappointment with Chima's writing.

I was really excited when she declared her intent to write more books in this series, but once I read it, I'm not sure why any publisher would pay for it. Its more like a novella than a novel.

Excellent start to a new story arc!

I really wasn't sure how Cinda Williams Chima would be able to continue her Heir Chronicles series. Really, the last book kind of tied everything up nicely, so there really wasn't much left to talk about. So, as I somewhat suspected, the fourth book in the series, Enchanter Heir, offers something of a side story about different characters in the same world. This is great because it cane help bring in new readers -sure, it helps to have the background from the previous novels, but it's not essential to understand what's going on. Also, Chima's skills have really strengthened since the Heir Chronicles and it was great to see that come alive here.

Enchanter Heir follows the intertwining tales of Jonah and Emma. Jonah is a student (and assassin) trained at a school known as The Anchorage, which was set up to help people with special abilities, and those affected by the Thorn Hill Massacre, of which Jonah -and Emma -are survivors. After Emma's grandfather turns up dead, she's sent running into the arms of her estranged father in an attempt to find out what happened and why there's a note left claiming that she's in danger.

Enchanter Heir started out slow, but built up a lot of steam as it moved forward, until I was finally sent crashing toward an exciting conclusion that left me wanting to read more. I thoroughly enjoyed the characters of Jonah and Emma, especially the edgy-ness that came out with Emma. The plot was unique and fresh for this series, and all around interesting. Probably the only problem I had with this book is that some things reminded me far too much of X-men. (Special schools with a wealthy benefactor for children with special abilities? Yep, sounds like X-men to me.)

A great start to the second half of this (somewhat rebooted) series. Can't wait to read more.

This book was the biggest disappointment of my month

This book made absolutely no sense. What occurred in previous books made no impact on the world this book takes place in despite the fact the author claims it did. How did Madison come to rule over the weir? How do they know she is alive? Why does anyone care what is happening in this book. Don't get me wrong I love this author. But this is by far is the worst book she has ever written. She should have stopped writing these books at The Dragon Heir. Read her Demon king books if you want to read something truly good she has written recently.

Set up book for the rest of the series without doubt

For those of you who personally know me, yes. I just rated a Cinda Williams Chima book four stars.
Why? For about 80 pages, I considered putting it down. The first two chapters were awesome. Then the next 80 pages.....I was just like, "Seriously? Zombies? Why are you playing this card?" But then once Lilith shows up, I started to get into it more. But up until that point I was really bothered. I still think I would have been happy with just the Thorn Hill conspiracy plot going on, but now I'm more comfortable with where Chima is taking this book.
This book is most certainly a set up book though. Anyone who knows me knows I'm okay with that, and I'm okay with how it's going so far. I just would like to read the next book so I can truly determine if this series is going to match up to first, the previous Heir series, and two, the Seven Realms series (the series that made her my favorite author). We shall see what happens.
I would recommend this book for teens above the age of 15. There are moments when Emma just like....oogles Jonah, which I guess is typical for teens, but for me I'm just like, yes he's super hot and I totally ship you two, but seriously your house is being attacked stop that. But I guess teens are more likely to swallow that than I am.

Sex; No, but seriously there's going to be by the way she oogles him. I don't know how it will happen given his deadly.....traits......but it's going to. Mark my words.
Drugs; Brief mentions
Violence; Yup. Jonah is an assassin. So....yeah. Lots of death. Goodness there's heart-wrenching death in the first two chapters. Not gory, but still. It's there.
Language; Occasionally, nothing too major. I really only noticed it once or twice.
Rock and roll; yup. Do teens use the word 'tunes' to describe music?

Useless romance, not enough plot development.

I normally love this author. This was a really disappointing book in a good series. I'm annoyed I posted for this. I would recommend any other work by Chima. It had an interesting plot that was kicked to the curb in favor of useless and annoying things.

Cinda Williams Chima Never Disappoints

The Enchanter Heir is Ms Chima's fourth in her "Heir" series. Though listed as a Young Adult entry, this series satisfies young and old. Chima is a born storyteller: I couldn't put this one down! Highly recommended!

Excellent...As Always

I was really excited to hear about a year ago that Chima was writing another Heir book. At the end of this one, it's apparent another one will be coming. I was a bit disappointed not to see a big return of all the characters from the first three, but the new characters are equally as loveable. I look forward to any additional novels to finish the story line of the people in this novel. Chima did a great job!

A Very Good Book

Bought these books for my granddaughter, and both of us have read all five. Really like the author, and enjoyed the books. They have a good story line, and don't disappoint. Highly recommend.
