From Booklist Sixteen-year-old orphan Seph McCauley is a wizard, one of the Weir, an underground magical society first introduced in companion novel The Warrior Heir (2006). But Seph has had no wizard training, and magicalxa0mishaps occur wherever he goes. When one such accident causes a death, Seph is sent to the Havens, an exclusive boys' school in rural Maine, where he finds the Alumni—a student group of wizards led by Headmaster Leicester. Seph is excited to explore his gifts, but when Leicester attempts to initiate him with a terrifying blood ritual,xa0the teenxa0realizes that this training comes at the price of his soul. In his combined independence, bravado, and vulnerability, Seth is an appealing character, making the psychological torture Leicester inflicts upon him all the more horrifying. Unfortunately, the pace lags once Seph escapes Leicester andxa0the Havens, at which point new and returning characters appear, and the chaotic politics of the Weirxa0come toxa0the forefront. Persistent readers will find that the momentum picks up again, though, andxa0most will emerge satisfied by thisxa0absorbing, suspenseful follow-up. In this companion to The Warrior Heir (Hyperion, 2006), orphaned Seph, 16, is an untrained wizard who can fling fire from his fingertips. After one of his many accidental fires kills a friend, he's sent to a secluded boys' school in Maine. The headmaster, Dr. Leicester, a powerful wizard, offers to train him. Initially, Seph agrees but then changes his mind after he's nearly forced to participate in an initiation where he's made to swear an oath to Leicester and allow him to link Seph's power to his. For refusing, Leicester tortures Seph with hallucinatory dreams that nearly drive him insane. When he finally finds a way to communicate with the outside world, Linda Downey, an enchanter, rescues him and takes him to the town of Trinity, OH, a sanctuary for wizards and other members of magical guilds. There, he meets many of the characters who appeared in the first book, including Jack Swift, Ellen Stephenson, and Leander Hastings, as well as a new character, Madison, who can draw power from wizards. Seph and his new friends must find a way to stop an impending war between the two great wizard houses. This exciting page-turner is darker than The Warrior Heir and, because of its depiction of Leicester's love of inflicting pain and frequent violence, is more appropriate for older readers. An enthralling novel to the end

I enjoyed reading The Wizard Heir. It was a little tough for me to get into it but once the story got going I was hooked. It is a different novel from The Warrior Heir. It does not pick up from the same spot we left the first book or with the same people. I wasn’t expecting that when I began The Wizard Heir. I liked this book a little better than the first book in the series. The characters from both books do finally come together and the stories combine. So you definitely need to read the Warrior Heir first. The first half of this book really sucked me in. Without giving anything away I got disinterested with some of the middle but it picked up again at the end. I feel like in the middle part we kind of lost Seph’s story a little. It was still there but we disconnected from him to get filled in on the happenings of the other characters again. I didn’t like that so much but all in all I still like this book. I will keep on reading. I’m excited for the Dragon Heir next.

Awesome Story

It was super fun to return to this alternate world and meet new characters and be told a brand new story with familiar faces. It was a lot darker and more brutal, but the story was extremely strong and engrossing. The finale definitely got my heart going and I wasn't sure how things were going to play out.

Seph is a great character with a complicated past tied to other characters. I kind of guessed the twist before it was revealed, but it still carried a lot of weight. I also found Jason to be a lot of fun, and would like to see more of Madison. There was also a deeper look into Linda and Leander's relationship and its consequences. The villains were also pretty dastardly, and I'm not sure how they're going to be topped.

The first book was very strong, but this one amplified everything tenfold. While it can technically stand alone, there is enough to leave me eager and excited to read the next book. I absolutely loved it!

Great Fantacy for teens or older

Very good book. Slightly older audience than Harry Potter (teen and older) but written in similar vein. Good Fantacy. If you like Narnia, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings or others in this genre you will likely like this book.

This series is really great

I am really enjoying this series. Cinda Williams Chima never disappoints me.

This book had such an interesting storyline. I found the introductory chapter to be confusing initially but it quickly made sense as I continued to read. It had moments that were just extremely frustrating and other moments that were…disturbingly evil. There were so many surprises in this book though I didn’t find that the identity of The Dragon was that shocking. The wrap up was a little quick and abrupt but otherwise this is a great read.

I loved that there was so much overlap with the characters from the first book into this one. It makes me excited to continue the series so that I can watch the world grow and evolve.

Excellent Book - Keep Reading

Great book! It takes a while to pick up. As the second book in a series it is rough picking up with all new characters at the beginning, but things quickly fall into place. Things pick up from there and before long you won't be able to out the book down!
