Description

“Bradford gives her readers more of what she does best--strong, savvy female protagonists who relentlessly pursue great destinies, characters much like the author herself…well-written and full of emotion…completely riveting…the plot, while always complex, has suspenseful moments to keep the pace sharp…good reading… Unexpected Blessings clearly shows why Bradford is still the premier writer of family sagas.” ― Miami New Times “The exploits and adventures of Bradford's indomitable heroines continue to make for lusty escapist fiction in this robust fifth novel in the series.” ― Publishers Weekly “The enduring theme of family loyalty ennobles the Harte family saga and raises it to a heartwarming crescendo that longtime fans will appreciate. New readers will relish it as well.” ― Book Page “Bradford enthralls readers.... Once again, readers will get swept up in the lives and loves of the Harte family.” ― RT Book Reviews The new blockbuster from one of the world's greatest storytellers delves into the life of Emma Harte―the original Woman of Substance―and the ambitious, passionate, and volatile women of the next generations. Evan Hughes , Emma's American great-granddaughter, is trying to integrate into the powerful Harte family. She is caught between her estranged parents, her new family, and new love. But a dangerous enemy hovers in the background. Tessa Longden , Evan's cousin, is battling her husband for custody of their daughter, Adele. When Adele suddenly goes missing, Tessa is forced to seek help from her half-sister Linnet―a woman who has been her rival all their lives. Linnet , the most brilliant businesswoman of the four great-granddaughters, is desperately trying to show that she is the natural heir to her mother, Paula. But her glittering future at the helm of the vast Harte empire means many sacrifices, perhaps even the loss of her sister's fragile trust. India Standish , the traditionalist in the family, falls in love with a famous British artist from a working-class background. Madly in love, India is determined to marry him, no matter what her family thinks. Evan, Tessa, Linnet, and India : four extraordinary women. Three generations of Hartes. One indomitable family whose loyalty binds them together and whose enemies want to tear them apart. Disappointing, at least for this reader

I remember liking the earlier book where I was first introduced to Evan, et. al., but this one left me utterly cold.

The first problem I had with it was keeping track of all the relationships being developed in the book. This might not have seemed such a hardship if I had actually come to care about any of the people about whom I was reading, but I couldn't identify with any of them. I tried to like them, mostly because I like sagas that take several books to wrap up and are filled with interesting people I might like to actually know, and I wanted this to be one series I looked forward to reading more from. Alas, it wasn't to be.

I found the language stilted. My American perspective perhaps makes it hard to enjoy dialogue filled with phrases like "my darling" and "darling ," and I may be judging based on my own impatience with that, but it just drove me nuts. Do people in Britain actually speak that way so much? I really would like to know that. My feeling is that they don't, if other reading experiences with British authors are any indication.

Also, I found the characters truly flat. Rarely did they behave "out of the box"; in other words, if they were part of the good guy circle, they were highly unlikely to act in any questionable way whatsoever. And the "good guys" were unassailably good; if a man got tossed into the mix, he had to be handsome, learned, famous, wealthy, and almost hypnotically appealing to a female character who herself seemed too good to be true. Strong women always win (by a lot). Annoying/destructive men always lose. People fall in love in seconds flat with the person they immediately understand will unlock the mystery of their lives. Oy.

Beautiful people living beautiful lives of wealth and privilege, and nary a person in the bunch who is anything like anyone I know.

This may be what some readers are looking for, but I'm looking for reading material that provides some characters not like me and some whose motivations, feelings, and language I can at least fathom as being realistic within my frame of reference.

I made it through the book, mostly because I kept hoping it would get better. Then, at the very end of the paperback version, the publshers had included a snippet of the author's next book in this series, and I read that just to see what it promised. It looks like one of the central tensions in that book will be related to whether the flagship store will (gasp) change. Doesn't that just make you want to read that book? I mean, what's more enthralling than a battle over whether to redecorate or revamp a store?

Nope, that definitely did not grab me.

Unexpected is right!

I am only half way through it and am struggling. I feel as if she loaned her name out to a new author or something. There is alot of repetition in the book and the characters are lifeless. Mind you, I couldn't write a book but I sure know what I like to read. I have read all the other books about Emma Harte but I loved them but if I have to read one more time about Emma's philosophy, which is repeated alot in this book, I might scream. I will get to the end but I certainly will think twice about getting the next one.

Enjoyable Reading...

I enjoy Barbara Taylor Bradford's books, particularly the Series, the Emma Harte Saga, beginning with "A woman of Substance" one of 6 paperback books) and ending with "Just Rewards". "Unexpected Blessings", as with all of the previous books, continue to be exciting reading and very hard to put down once you begin reading.
