USMLE Step 1 Qbook: 850 Exam-Like Practice Questions to Boost Your Score (USMLE Prep)

I also started off with the first aid question bank (USMLE Rx), but found the questions in Kaplan to be better. USMLE Rx has a lot of buzz words, which may be better during your first two medical school years when exams often times include buzz word descriptions, but the USMLE (still haven't taken it yet, but from NBME questions and others opinions) tends to stay away from buzz words and goes more into descriptions, which Kaplan does. Kaplan also has more third order questions, which mean you'll get used to answering questions that are a little bit more difficult than the actual exam. The book is filled with a great intro going over the USMLE and test taking strategies, and gives excellent responses to why each question in it is either right or wrong, and why the wrong answers are wrong. If you are looking for a qbank to study for the boards, Kaplan over USMLE Rx. If youre looking for a qbank to do during your first semesters, USMLE Rx might be a little bit closer to the types of questions medical schools will be asking on exams. But, as a question bank in your dedicated study or last year, this is by far the better written of the question banks. Also, I'm assuming you will at some point use UWORLD. Im saving that for my dedicated study period, and using this qbank during my 4th semester. UWORLD is the best, however this is what I would recommend using before doing UWORLD questions.

A Warning:
I bought the book new from amazon. They sent it in a plastic, bubble-wrapped bag. It wasn't enough protection for the book, and it arrived with some damage to the cover.

Thoughts:
- It's a good deal. For just starting out with studying, it is a cheap way to access practice questions, and we won't lose access to them after six months! He will be able to work through the questions at his own pace while he starts out studying.
- The questions are divided by topic. Even though he hasn't gotten through all of his curriculum at this point, he will be able to practice Step 1 style questions on the topics he has covered.
- The answers explain why the correct choice is right and why the other choices are incorrect.
- There is not a whole lot of space in the book for notes. There are margins in the first section, which is just as short intro to the test and study methods, but there is not much space in the Q & A portion of the book.
- It is printed on nice quality, glossy paper.
